Jon Marvin Clapp
"Who Am I?" You may recall that Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of my heroes of the faith, asked that
question in the context of his poem of the same name. Perhaps you have asked yourself that question
many times. I know I have. Because of my 27 years as a caseworker with Oakland County Probate
Court, I became known as the caseworker who is also a minister, and was asked to perform weddings
because of that reputation. And because my service as caseworker prevented my attending Annual
Conference, I was often regarded as a lay person by my fellow clergy. In the past twenty-some years, I
have been a member of the Detroit Annual Conference on Honorary Location.
But, in the nearly 40 years since ordination at Adrian Methodist Church in 1963 (before the
merger with our United Brethren) , I have tried to follow the leading of our Lord in ministering to
people in a loving and caring way, at Nardin Park from '63 to '65, at Lola Valley from '65 to'71 , and as
Assistant Minister for 30 years in a part-time capacity at Clarkston United Methodist Church. Oh, the
stories I could tell of the many wonderful times and people, the frustrations, the testing times. And yet
I always said that as a caseworker working with court wards, I was glad I had the witness and support
of a loving family and congregation! I am indebted to Rev. Fred Vosburg, who, while serving at Flint
Court Street, introduced this seminarian to the United Methodist Church, and had continued to be a
friend through the years. Rev. Frank Cozadd saw me hiding in the far reaches of the balcony at
Clarkston UMC 40 years ago and invited me to serve in a part-time capacity, and I fell in love with the
congregation! From Rev. Jim Balfour I gained a wonderful friendship and a mischievous sense of humor
that continues to this day. And Rev. Doug Trebilcock has become a friend and trusted help in ministry
over the course of our 18 years together at Clarkston UMC.
God has blessed me with a nurturing home while growing up, a wonderful wife and helpmate in
Karen, and two daughters of whom I couldn't be more proud! So I come to the end of these 39 years of
ministry hoping that I might continue on for many more years even in retirement! May God continue to
bless us all, to the end of our days and forever!
