Zack A . Clayton
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: I was born in Trafford,
Penn. on March 12, 1925 to Zack and B.).
Clayton. My parents were always active in the
United Brethern Church in Pitcairn, Penn. where
I grew up - an only child.
Schooling included Otterbein Col lege, Wayne
State University, A.B., Garrett Theologica l
Seminary, M.Div.
Three yea rs were spent in the U.S. Navy w ith
15 months in the Pacific theater aboard a light
cruiser, the U.S. Duluth as a Pharmacist Mate
2nd class.
At the close of the war our ship was in Yokosuko,
japan un til the arrival of Army occupational
forces. This period had a great influence on me
regarding the suffering of others, particularly chi ldren during the time of war.
M. Evelyn Phillips of Luray, Mo. and I met at Garrett and subsequently got married
in September of 1952. We have two children, Zack Alan of Columbus, Oh.; and Mary
M. Ruehl of New Baltimore, Mich. We have two grandchildren at this point in time.
Ordination took place at Kalamazoo First United Methodist Church under Bishop Marshall Reed. Churches served since 1952 are: Lawton; Dearborn First, associate; St.
James, Detroit, associate; Davisburg; Graham-Dimond, Flint; W illiamston; Flint: Asbury;
Division of Evangelism and Laity, Conference Staff; Midland: Aldersgate.
I started out at Wayne State as a pre-med student for three years but felt the call to
ministry and entered seminary.
Servi ng the local church and God has had its ups and downs, but I can say I never
truly regretted my decision.
Twenty years of my ministry have been in Midland and they have been 20 blessed
years of service to a wonderful group of people.
Of course I must give much credit to Evelyn who helped me unselfishly all those yea rs
and who. was there in dark times as well as the good times. She was and is my mainstay
and has contributed much out of her love for the church.
Interests and hobbies have been photography, pottery on the wheel, woodworking,
golf, traveling, ca mping and our former cottage up north.
At this w riting we have in the works building a new home just south of Fenton about
two miles off the 23 expressway.

TESTIMONIAl: Zack Clayton has had a significant and varied, and a very creati ve
ministry, beginning as a student, first at Lawton in the West Michigan Conference,
while completing work at Garrett Seminary, until retiring this conference after 20 yea rs
at Aldersgate UMC in Midland.
I knew him first at Dearborn First; then at St. james, in Detroit, where he learned pastoral
skill s and developed a passion for people, their problems, and their possibi lities.
Both he and Evely n sought new ski lls and o pportunities as they moved on to
churches in the Flint District. Evelyn deve loped ski lls in Arts and Drama. They attended training sessions in worship, and they trained and became conference leaders in
Marriage Communication Labs. Zack even tried one yea r in Conference Staff ministry,
and th en asked for appointment to a congregation, because th at was w here his heart
and skills were. Aldersgate church in Midland was ripe for his kind of love and care.
He gave freely of his time and energy and skill to district and conference leadership;
wi th Eve lyn as Camp counsellors at Lake Louise and Coneley, and in famil y life wo rk.
He served on the Board of the Ministry, and as a counselling pastor.
He developed skill s in special ministry to the deaf and hard of hearing, and learn ed
and taught American Sign language. At Aldersgate the congregation remodeled the
church not only to serve a growing congregation, but to also be completely barrier
free, to serve the needs of those wi th limited mobility and o ther factors in the
neighborhood and the city. Aldersgate has become the location for city wide handicapper programs in worship and study.
It takes great skill and real faith to serve a dynamic congregation as it grows, and Aldersgate has grown every one of the 20 years Zack and Evelyn have been there. The chu rch
is not 30 years old, and has outgrown its facilities tw ice. In th e last 20 yea rs it has
grown from 375 to almost 650. Its budget has grown from $45,000 to $220,000, plus
a bui Iding program that needs $100,000 per year, and every yea r all apporti onments
have been paid in full.

Zack has nurtured lay participation and leadership as few pastors have. Not only is
the lay leadership outstanding in the church, but Aldersga te people have served on
district and conference boards and agencies; attended leadership training events, and
in many cases provided leadership in beyond the loca l church training events.
Most of all Zack and Evelyn have modeled and encouraged a congregation that is
loving and caring. It is a co mmuni ty of people always ready to reach out in love and
concern for all w ho need them. Their ministry w ill be mi ssed, but they leave behind
a congrega ti on who know how to be 'in ministry' to each other and their communi ty
because they have seen it in Zack and Evelyn.
John D. Rozeboom
