FORD, dean of Southwestern University,
have become residents of the Wesleyan
Home in that city. Mr. Clifford is improved in health after a long illness of
two years ago. Their grandson, DAVID
B. CLIFFORD, received a B.A. degree in
June from Southwestern and has been
selected to enroll in the first class at
Washington University School of Medicine. Upon completion of a special sixyear program he will receive the M.D.
and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Another grandson, JOHN CLIFFORD is in
his last year at Perkips School of Theology in Dallas.

THREE GENERATIONS OF
METHODIST MINISTERS
A tradition of service to Methodism that
spans 67 years and three generations is
the proud heritage of the Clifford
family . Rev . Frederick J. Clifford, 93 ,
shown above seated, retired from the
Detroit conference and resides with his
wife in a nursing home in Bartlett,
Texas. His son, Dr. Frederick Burr
Clifford, standing left, formerly of the
Detroit conference with pastorates at
VanBorn, Lincoln Park Dix Avenue and
Britton, is now a professor of humanities
at Southwestern University in nearby
Georgetown, Texas. His grandson, Rev.
John Frederick Clifford, standing right,
has been pastor of the Bartlett, Texas,
United Methodist Church for the past
year. Rev. Fred J. Clifford eagerly
awaits his weekly Michigan Christian
Advocate to read the news of the
Detroit conference.

REV. FRED J. CLIFFORD a
minister of the Detroit Conference , died
August 11 at the W ill O' Bell Nursing
Home in Bartlett, Texas . Rev. Clifford
was born February 10, 1885, in Oxford,
England. He began his m inistry there
and emigrated to the United States in
1910. He joined the Methodist Episcopa l Church of the Det roit Conference , a connection he maintained
throughout his life . In the Detroit
Conference he served the Methodist
churches of Roscommon and Standish,
where he married Genevieve Cla ra
Burr. Together t hey served charges at
Samaria , Aza lia, Flat Rock , Onaway,
Hancock, Marquette First, Detroit
Woodme re and Martha Holmes Memorial in Detroit. In 1950 Rev. Clifford
retired and moved to Daytona Beac h,
Fla . Because of renewed health there
he assumed th e pastorate of the
Edgewater Unio n Church, Edgewater,
Fla ., where he remained as pastor for
ten years. He and Mrs. Clifford lived in
Edgewate r from 1961 to 1969 . They
spe nt three yea rs in Georgetown, Texas
from 1969 to 1973 and eventually
moved to Bartlett, Texas where Rev.
Clifford's grandson was his pastor for a
year. Rev . Clifford is survived by his
wife Genevieve, a son, Frederick Burr
Clifford of Georgetown, Texas, a
brother, Ralph E. Clifford of O xford,
England, and by three grandchildrenRev . john Clifford of Kerens, Texas, Dr.
David Clifford of St. Louis, Missouri and
j eanne Ellen Clifford of Georgetown,
Texas. A memorial service was held in
the First United Methodist Church
Georgetown , Texas, on August 14.

in the Detroit Conferenc e to the time of
his retirement in 1952 . M rs. Clifford is
· survived by one brothe r, Ralph J. Burr of
Standish; one son, Dr. Frederick Burr
Cli fford of Georgetown , Texas; three
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
