:Rev. and Mrs. Dee Warren Cobb of Royal
(Oak, was united in marriage to STEPHAN
1WAYNE CONAWAY, son of Mr. and
tMrs. Ward Conaway of Cardington, Ohio,
Jon November 29 at 4 p.m. before the altar
!Of St. John's United Methodist Church in
cRoyal Oak. The groom's former pastor,
cRev. Donald Yaussy of North Royalton,
:Ohio, assisted in the ceremony. Mr. Cobb,
:pastor of the church, gave his daughter
away and then joined Mr. Yaussy for the
<saying of the vows and exchange of rings.
Then the two ministers served Holy Communion to the couple. Miss Cloe Chunn
of Tampa, Fla., was the organist. The bride
was attended by her sister, Janet, a student
at the Conservatory of Music at Oberlin
College, who also sang two selections before the processional, Miss Patricia Boatman of Detroit, and Miss Mary Etta Eyler
of Durham, N.C. The groom's college roomm ate, Bob Moore of Arlington, Va., served
as best man and the ushers were Charles
Chewning of Sharon, Penn.; Carl Davis of
Columbus, Ohio; and Nick Wheeler of
Chapel Hill, N.C. A reception was held at
the parsonage for members of the two
families and the wedding party. After
graduating from Cass Technical High
School in Detroit, the bride attended
Duke University and received a B.A. Degree in Political Science last June. She was
employed in the mortgage department of
the National Bank of Detroit. The groom
also graduated from Duke Universitv in
June with a BA. Degree in Economics.
After a brief wedding trip the newlyweds
are residing in an apartment in Columbia,
S.C., where the groom is presently stationed with the United States Army at
Fort Jackson JI! the Public Information

Miss Janet Cobb, daughter of Rev. and
Mrs. Dee W. Cobb of St. John's Church
Livonia, who will graduate from th~
Oberlin College Conservatory of Music
Oberlin, Ohio, has received a Fulbright
Scholarship for a year's study and performance in Germany. The 22-year- old
mezzo- soprano will leave New York
August 1 and spend two months in
language study before beginning her vocal
work October 1 at a school in Cologne.
Mr. and Mrs. Cobb recently visited the
Oberlin campus to be present for her
senior recital. Some 600 friends, faculty
and students attended the performance
for which she was given a standing ovation at the close. Miss Cobb's future plans
include European travel, and then returning to the States for a career combining
performance and teaching on the college
level

Group. She had the lead role in the
school presentation of "The Fantasticks,"
a nd in the Spring Choral Conce1·t was
the featured solo ist, singin g t he Alto
Rapsodie by Johannes Brahms.

Bishop and Mrs. Dwight E. Loder were
honored guests for the golden anniversary
celebration at St. John's United Methodist
Church , Royal Oak, on October 29. Bishop
Loder preacfied for both morning worship
services on the subject, "Overwhelming

church bell and other memorabilia are on
display. Bishop Loder was the preacher
of the day as the church celebrated its
fiftieth anniversary.
Victory." At a coffee hour in the church
parlor worshipers, as well as children
from the church school, were given opportunity to personally greet and get
acquainted with the l.oders. The ladies of
the church expressed their special appreciation for Mrs. Loder's presence by presenting her with an orchid corsage.
The anniversary Sunday climaxed a
series of special events during the year
as the church commemorated the organization of the congregation on the sam e
calendar Sunday fifty years ago, October
29, 1922, under the leadership of Rev.
Eugene M. Moore. There were twentyseven charter members. The first name
of the church was Starr Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church and worship services
were held in a local school until the first
building was completed. This small frame
structure served the congregation until a
new church was built and consecrated in
1955. A three-level educational building
was added for the growing congregation
in 1960.
Rev. W. W. Dale was the first pastor
appointed to the church. Others who followed him were: Arthur E. Smith, J. W.
Robinson, C. W. Collinge, John Somers,
Lynn Chapel, Frederick C. Vosburg, W.
Cadman Prout, I. Grant Dunlap, G. Bryn
Evans, Charles W. Cookingham, and Dee
Warren Cobb.
reunion of members /~
Thoburn UMC, Detroit, held a reunion
of Girl Scout Troups 1808 and 2256 on
June 21. The event was held at the adjacent homes of Marjorie and AI Bain and
Mary and Carl Witzgall, parents of two of
the scouts, on Lake Tyrone , Mabley Hill
Road, Fenton. These two scout troops existed between September 1956 and June
1960.
One hundred scouts, their husbands,
children and parents attended. Six scout
and Brownie leaders were present , also.
Two of the young women live in Europe
and were unable to attend. They are: Rev .
Dee Cobb's daughter, Linda Cobb &
way of Paris . France, and Susan Stump
Bartels of Karlsruhe, Germany.
Slides and movies of the scouts' last big
events were shown . These included a
showboat and trips to Niagara Falls and
Mackinaw.

THE REV. DEE W.
COBB, 87, retired from the
Detroit Conference, died Oct.
23, at Columbia Hospital,
New Port Richey, Fla., after
suffering a stroke. Dee Cobb
was born in 19 10 in Greenville, Texas, and grew up in
Durant, Okla . He received his
undergraduate degree a t
Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky.,
in 1935, and his B.D. degree at
Asbury Seminary in 1937. H e
married Betty Jean Jackson in
1943, and together they carried on a ministry of word and
song. He accepted an appointment to the Detroit Conference in 1956 to serve the Van
Buren and Thoburn congrega- •
tions in Bay City, then went on
to serve the Thoburn UMC in
Detroit ( 1958-66) and St.
John's UMC, Royal Oak
(I 966-75). During these years
he was a member of the Conference Boards of Evangelism
and Education and served as
Detroit East District Secretary
of Evangelism. Since retirement in 1975, he served as a
minister of visitation and an
associate pastor for First
UMC, New Port Richey, Fla.
Dec served as a member of the
board of
tru s tees of
Asbury Theologica l Seminary
from
1954-78. In
1979 he was
awarded an
hon o rar y
Doctor
of
Divinity
degree from
t..::..t:.___.;;.-J...==::>:~ the seminary
and elected a life trustee. He is
survived by his wife Betty,
daughters Linda Conaway
(London, England) and Janet
Cobb (Vienna, Austria), two
sisters and four grandchildren.
