BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
James Daniel Cochran is a native of Muskegon Heights. Michigan.
He spent five years in the United States Navy.
During his service
time. he traveled to such places as Naples. Florence. Parts. Barcelona,
and was a member of a group who had an audience with Pope Pius XII at
his summer home just outside of Rome.

Cochran is a graduate of
Wilburforce University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
He graduated
in 1963 from the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Delaware. Ohio.
After graduation from
Methodist Church, at
se~nary,
~mysville,
he served his first pastorate, Scott
Kentucky.
Upon completion of six months
in this pastorate. he was transferred to the Michigan Conference where he
served as co-pastor of the St. Paul
~~thodist
Church in Grand Rapids. Later,
he became the organizing pastor of Church of the Redeemer, also located
in Grand Rapids.
Annual Conference.
In 1968, Mr. Cochran became a member of the Detroit
He has served as an associate pastor at Central United
Methodist Church. Detroit. until his recent appointment.
Mrs. Cochran. Theresa, has been an active minister's wife servina in
vital roles within the church setting.
She is a native of Detroit and
IIIO'Yed to Belleville, Michigan at an early age.
She baa an extensive background
in nursing and has enjoyed the opportunities to work at her speciality as an
operating room technician.

Rev. and Mrs. Ja mes D. Cocha rn [center] and thei r daughters [left to right], Donna, Janet and
Ma rie, were honored at a farewell gathe ring and extended best wishes by more tha n 400 friends
fro m churches in the Detroit West District . Mr. Cochran will be completing six years as
superintendent of the district in June .

The 59 United Methodist churches of
Detroit West District had an opportunity to
show their appreciation to Distri ct Superintendent james D. Cochran and his family on
March 8 at the Clarenceville United Methodist
Church of Livonia. Rev. Cochran will be
leaving as superintendent in june after
completing six years.
Over 400 attended the event to wish the
Coc hran family good luck and goodbye.
Refreshments were served first which included a cake decorated with red lettering on
white frosting and the shape of the Detroit
West District in blue.
The program inc luded the singing of several
of Rev. Cochran's favorite songs by the
congregation and tributes given by Rev .
Brad ley Watkins, Dr. James Bristah, Rev .
Phylem on Titus, Dr. Roya l Synwolt, Rev .
Melvin Williams, Rev. Richard Griffith and
Mrs. Ronald Carter. Musical selections were
presented by the Faith Bethany Gospel
Ensemble and a trio composed of Rev. Floyd
Ellison, t rombone; Phillip Haddrill , clarinet;
and Rev. Cochran, saxophone.
Rev. Cochran was presented with a love gift
of money from the churches on the district,
and a check from Black Methodist Renewal
with a plaque honoring his work in this area.
The Planning Committee presented the
Distri ct Superintendent with a miniature 1923
Ford to take the place of his car which was
stolen last year. The evening ended with Mrs.
Rosebud McDuffie of Faith Bethany Church
si nging "B less This House."
The Planning Committee was composed of
representatives of various chu rch groups and
organi zations includin g Rev. Frank Davenport
and Rev. Russell Smi th. M inisters' Association; M rs. Ralph Chrysler and Mrs. John
Walls. United Methodist Women; Mrs.
Charles Bayless and Mrs. Donald Morris,
Ministers' Wives' Assoc iation; Tom Harris,
United Methodist Men ; and AI Williams and
M rs. Robert Geib (chairperson). District
Council on Ministry.
