Edward C. Coley
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: I was born to Cyril and
janice Coley, at our fami ly home in Houston,
Texas. My mother was assisted by a mid-wife
who was also a retired missionary. Early years
were spent in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma,
but Ozark, Arkansas has been called home since
age 12. I graduated from the Ozark High School
in 1944.
On january 6, 1944, I enlisted in the A rmy Ai r
Corps
and
trained
as
a "Radi oOperator/Mechanic-Gunner" on B-24 Bombers,
later serving in the South Pacific and japan. Having joined the Air Corps midway of his senior
year, I missed our graduation ceremonies, held
while I was in Crew Training at Walla Walla,
Washington. My call to the ministry came during my last leave before going overseas, and the certainty grew firmer with each passing day.
On return from the service, I entered Hendrix College, Conway, Arkansas to begin
training for the ordained ministry. Six months later, I was assigned to supply pastor
a small country church near by for the magnificent sum of $100.00 per year. There
I met and married the chu rch's Kindergarten Sunday School teacher, Virginia Led rick.
On graduation from H endri x, Dallas, Texas became home, whi le I attended Perkins
School of Theology, SMU, graduating in 1952. Elders Order~ came that same year
and a new church at Bl ytheville, Arkansas.
Shortly after, I returned to the United States Air Force as a Chaplain, and w as assigned
to the new Kinross Air Force Base (later called Kinchel oe) in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan. In 1955, transfer was made from the North Arkansas to the Detroit Conference, and Virginia and I were assigned to our first Church in Michigan-Trinity in
Iron Mountain. Subsequent churches have been St. Andrews, Detroit; Mt. Olivet, Dearborn; Faith, Trenton; and Newburg in Livo nia.
Virginia and I are bl essed with four lovely daughters: janice Frank, of Dearborn; Linda Renardo of Ch icago, IL; joyce johnston of Detroit; and Gwenn Coley of Dearborn.
Six grandchildren, three boys and three girls are the delight of thei r grandparents.
M y principle hobby has been as a pilot, where I also qualified as a Flight and Instrument instructor. Virginia's has been in rug hooking and teaching thi s ancient craft to
others. We have greatly enjoyed our ministry wherever we have served and cherish
all th e friends we've known in every church. Our retirement home will be in Livonia,
only 18 minutes (max) from four of the grandchi ldren.

appointed to Dearborn, MI. Olivet, and I had just arrived to serv,"; at ~earborn, Goo~
Shepherd. Both of us were trying to get used to the new term Umted Method ist.

Our mutual Jove for the game of golf nurtured a growing friendsh.ip. The k~en c<:>mpetition we enjoyed on the course was never evident in o.ur profess1onal r~l~t1~nsh 1 ps.
Often the outi ng became an occasion for deep conversation ~bout our mm1stnes. The
cari ng heart of a pastor was plainly evident as Ed sha ~~d h1s concerns for th.e congregation he served. 1also appreciated the words and spmt of encouragement d1rected
at me as we labored side by side in the city.
Although 1 did not share Ed's passion for flying,. I do rem:mber one bea~tiful ~pring
morning when he enticed me to accompany h1m on a fl1gh! as. he pract1ced '.nstr~
ment flying. we bounced around the skies over southeast M1ch1gan, Ed exhultm~ m
the experi ence whi le 1 vainly longed for much firmer ground under my feet. T1me
has not dimmed that memory or feeli ng.
But most of all, 1 came to know a man deeply c~m~itted t? jesus Christ and the ministi)'
of the gospel. Ed expressed that commitment m h1s de~1cat.1on ~o .the ch~rch and h1s
life for the people commended to ~is care. 1. an:' certa m h1 ~ m1~1stry w dl not cease
as he enters the 'retired' relati onship, but w dl fmd expression m many ways as he
continues to serve the l ord he loves.
