CALL TO WORSHIP

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
In the death of Jesus Christ, God's way in the world
seemed finally defeated. But death was no match for God.
The resurrection of Jesus was God's victory over death.
Death often seems to prove that life is not worth living,
that our best efforts and deepest affections go for nothing. We
do not yet see the end of death. But Christ has been raised
from the dead, transformed, and yet the same person.
In Christ's resurrection is the promise of ours. We are
convinced that the life God wills for each of us is stronger than
the death that destroys us. The glory of that life exceeds our
imagination, but we know we shall be with Christ.
So, we treat death as a broken power. Its ultimate defeat is
certain. In the face of death we grieve. Yet, in hope we
celebrate life.
No life ends so tragically that its meaning and value are
destroyed. Nothing, not even death, can separate us from the
love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MEMORIAL SERVICE INFORMATION
During the annual conference session a memorial service shall be held for the following who have died
since the last session of the annual conference: ordained and diaconal ministers, missionaries of the
Detroit Annual Conference, elected lay members of the previous annual conference, lay members of the
conference ministry team, local pastors, and spouses and dependent children of clergy members, and
others recommended by the Committee on Memoirs and the Commission on the Laity.
(2001 Detroit Annual Conference Rules of Order, IV-R, Page 7)

A Memorial Service will again be held during Annual Conference. The service will include a Call to
Remembrance when each person being remembered is named and a short statement read about them.
We contact each family personally. However, because of health, distance, or other reasons, sometimes families
are unable to attend the service or write a statement of remembrance. If you were especially close to one being
remembered, or if your church was among his or her pastorates, would you be willing to step-in and represent the
family if needed?
The names of those known to be remembered, at this time, are listed below. If you know of others who should
be remembered according to the Conference Rules of Order, listed above, please let me know the name,
relationship to conference, and relative to be contacted, immediately.
Your response is much appreciated. In the past, we have been able to lovingly remember these saints as servants
of God who served with unique gifts and talents. Without your help, sometimes nothing more than obituary
information is available. All information receive is passed on to the memoirs committee and the archives.
I look forward to hearing from some of you this year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
