Lew's retirement in May of 1996.)
TESTIMONIAL: "When you were born, that was God's Gift to you.
What you do with your life is your gift to God."
Lewis Palm Compton has served as pastor of Trinity United Methodist
Church of Chesaning for the past twelve years. Lew has been not only a
pastor of Trinity, but a pastor of the entire community of Chesaning. Lew
always has time for anyone in need of a listening ear. No matter where
you came in contact with Lew, one is struck by his love, warmth, and
concern. Lew always has the time to stop, chat, and above all, to listen.
No matter what time of the day or night, he is ready to help those in
need. His compassion is tireless and is evidenced by the community
around him.
.·
In September of 1993, Lew was calling on a family of Trinity when he
was struck by a hunting arrow. Lew came within minutes of death.
Through this peril, his concern was not for himself but for the family of
the person who shot him. The entire community felt the arrow's pierce.
But the Lord was not done with Lew . . . there was more loving and :
caring for Lew to do.
Lew's love for his community has always been known, but not until the/
evening of Lewis Compton Night in November of 1983, was the
community's love for Lew more visible. Three hundred people, many of
them non-Trinity members, came to share the blessing of Lew's
recovery. These people's lives had been touched by Lew's love during
their times of joy and sorrow. As a special tribute, the Rotary Club
bestowed upon Lew the prestigious honor of being a Paul Harris Fellow.
At the time of his award, one fellow Rotarian expressed, "Lew is truly a
man of God."
Lew will be physically missing from our pulpit as he retires, but the
legacy of his loving, caring spirit will remain with us. We of Trinity
United Methodist Church know Lew will continue to serve our Lord, for
his ministries have been and will continue to be his gifts to God.
