SERMON FOR SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1964
SUBJECT: "THE WORK OF THE CHURCH - TEXT : JOHN 6:27-29
The Church has come to a sorry state of affairs when we find ourselves looking enviously
at Communism as the outstanding example of dedication and expendability.
a ting judgment overtaken us?
Why has this humili-
Could it be that we have developed a false sense of having arriv-
ed - that we have r eached the cr est of the Christian goal by achi eving a kind of economic su.premacy.
Surely this is the gr eat American heresy .
The peopl e of a South American country went out t o the polls a few days ago amid gunfire
and revolution, at the risk of their lives they t urned out ninety-four per cent strong.
compl acent Unite d States of Ameri ca, fifty per
par for the cour se on a rainy el ecti on day .
cen~
In our
turn out of the votingpopul ation is about
And the answer to this questi on of complacency may
very well be due a lso to our false sense of having arrived - so we are not r eally goi ng anywhere
In view of these alarming deteriorati ons of Church and State, we need to re-evaluate the
impor tance of the WORK OF THE CHURCH.
We need to r e -define the wor k of the church) and t o r e -
dedicate ourselves to that work.
Two very important dates in our l ocal church cal endar are WORLD WIDE COMMUNI ON on October
4, and our SPIRITUAL LIFE MEETI NGS, November 9 thr ough 15 . Thes e days have been
des i gnate~
by _our Program Council and approved by the Local Confer ence for our edifi cation and spiritual
r enewal.
These are days whi ch can bring spiritual enri chment to our church - but it wi ll not
happen unless we make it happenl
Some of you a r e going to be a s ked to serve on a tel ephone
committee, some on the publi city committ ee, s ome on a r efreshment committee, some on an ar t nnd
mu eic
committ ee, and every one of you on a committee of one to invi te others to attend with
you and to pray for yourself and t he r es t of us sinner s .
Now if you see no impor tance in this
sort of endeavor, i n the light of things as they a r e) then .we 1 ll pr ay fervently for you as one
who i s not working on the solution but i s part of the problem.
The r e a r e s ome vmo do not come to our church any more, and the reason given to t he pastor
f or their absence is that they have been hur t by members of the church .
We know as wel l as you
do that too often feelings a r e wor n on the s l eeve at church like no other pl ace on ear th .
there is something deeper here than f e elings .
But
For exampl e, our f a ilure to mis s these people,
our f a ilure to be concerned about the ir absence and l et them know it with a f i endly " I miss
you in church" phone call.
This is not just the work of the preacher, church s chool t ea cher
Page Two - 9-27- 64
or church secretary - THIS I S THE WORK OF THE CHURCH - brother and sister Church Member , this
is our job.
This is especi ally the WORK OF THE CHURCH: to be concerned for those who get hurt
in the shuffle, to swallow our pride and go that second mile if necessary , turn the other cheek
if the task calls f or it - this is the very pr incipl e of the CROSS - the principle that cr osses
out r etaliation, r ecrimination and vindicati on i n favor of second- mile actions and turning- the other- cheek attitudes.
To be a bit more specific about t he work of the church, let us contrast its essential
purposes •ri t h its l esser or mis i nter preted purposes .
The '\oTor k of the church is not a PERPETUA-
TION,but a PROPAGATION •.••. Not a DOMINATI ON, but a COMMON DENOMINATOR ••••• Not EXPLANATION, but
EXPRESSION ••••• Not so much a SOCIAL CONQUEST as a SOCIAL CONSCIENCE .•••• Not so much AMALGAMATION
as SEPARATION ••••• And not selfish GETTING, but SELF- GIVING .
These are some of the important criteria of church wor k .
We should like to qual ify
each of thes e statements and per haps elabor ate upon some of them that seem most pertinent to
us .
The work of the church is " not perpetuation, but propagation ."
We a r e not commissioned
by our Lord J esus Christ to build and mantain an eccles i astical wall of self-preser vation a r ound
our little creeds and customs, provincialism and pr ejudices, traditions and technicalities, but
t o "go and make disciples of a ll nations, baptizing them i n the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe a ll that I have commanded you; and lo, I
am with you a l ways, to the close of the age . 11
As
members of His Church, we are commissioned to
share the spi ritual weal th wi th others - to gi ve the Bread of Life to hungr y hearts at home and
abroad .
The work of the church i s "not a domination, but a common denominator ."
church is most unique in this ar ea .
The task of the
We are "in the \vorld, but not of the world ."
the salt of the earth, not the potatoes .
We are to be
We arc charged with the obligation of lighting the
stage of action, not starring in the limelight .
Like our Master, we are not t o be ministered
unto ; but to minister.
The work of the church is '' not explanation, but expression . 11

For to see good put in action .•• I s wha.t everybody needs."
The best defenders of the faith are thos e who express i t in self-giving and creative living.
And the ve ry best way to define our Christian Faith is b y our attitudes and actions.
The world
is saying to us who profess to be follm.,rers of Jesus Christ, "What you do and what you leave
undone speak so l oudly we cannot hear a thing you arc s aying ."
Jesus s a id 1 "Yc s hall know them
by the ir fruits."
The work of the church is "not so much a social conquest as a Social conscience."
Jesus
said, "Let your light so shine before men , that they my see your good works, and gl orify your

And Paul wrote to his spiritual son Titus : "In a ll things shovr thy-
s elf a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing uncorrupti on, gravity, sincerity , sound
speech that cannot be condemned; that he tha t is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having
no evil to speak of you."
Some one has made this clever observati on :
to comfort the disturbed, and to disturb the comfortable ."

We never r ead about Felix calling Paul - convenience has no place in
so i mportant a matter as a man 's salvation .
The work of the church is"not so much amalgamation as s eparation ."

Here a r e some New Testament directives on this pha s e of the wor k of the church:
" Don ' t link up with unbe liever s and try t o work with them .
"ther e be b etvreen good and evil?
What common inter es t can
Hmv can light and darkness share life toge ther?
be harmony between Christ and the devil?
Hm• can there
Hha t busines s can a believer have with an unbeliever?
What common ground can idols hold with the t emple of God?
For we, r emember, are living t empl es
of the living God, as God has said: i i vrill dwe ll i n them and walk i n them: and I will be their
God, and they shall b e my peopl e .
Wheref or e come ye out from among them and be ye separate,
saith the Lord, and touch no unclean thing ; and I vrill r e ce ive you, a nd will be t o you a Father
and ye shall be t o me s ons and daughters , saith the Lord Almighty . 111 (II Cor . 6:14-18 Phillips) .
I n the i nt ercessory prayer of J esus i n the s eventeenth chapt er of John as He prayed for
His contemporary dis cipl e s and for us , He said: ,.I have given them thy word; and the world has
ha ted them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
I do not pray
that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but t hat thou shouldst keep them f r om the evil
one .
They ar e not of the world, even a s I am not of t he world.
Sanctify them in the truth:
thy word is t ruth. " ( RSV) •
And the vener able Fisher man ha s written for us in I Peter 4:3-6:
11
0ur past life may have
been good enough for pagan purposes , though it meant sensuality, lus t, drunkenness , orgies,
car ousals and worship i ng f orbidden gods.
Indeed your for mer companions may think it very queer
that you will no l onger join with theiil in their ri ot ous excesses, and accor di ngly say a ll sor ts
of w1pl easant t hings ab out you.
Don 't worry: they ar e the ones who will have to expl ain the ir
b ehavior bef or e the one who is p r epar e d to judge all men, whether living or dead. u
(Phillips).
So we can see by thes e directive s of the Holy Scri ptures that the chur ch is a unique
corrununity.
As Peter described it,
11
You a r e a chosen r ace, a r oyal priesthood, a holy nation,
God 's own people, that you may decl are the wonderful deeds of h i m who called you out of darknes s
i nto his marve l ous light.
Once you wer e no peopl e but now you ar e God ' s peopl e .•.• "
And last but not l east , the wor k of the chur ch is " not se l f ish getting, but s elf-giving . n
If t he CROSS means a nything at a ll t o the Chris tian Church , it means SELF-GIVING.
If t his is
cur i ns i gnia, if thi s i s our emb lem of distincti on, if thi s i s our symbol of l oyalty and servi ce
t o the Master , then l et us get these words of the Master fi xed i nde libly in our nrinds and l et
them p ermeate our be ing: 11 I f any man \vould come afte r me, l et him deny hims el f a nd t a ke up hi s
cr oss and f ollow me . For whoever woul d save his lif e will l ose it; and whoever l os e s hi s life
for my s ake and the gospePs will save it. 11 (Mark 8:34-35 RSV).
