Mrs. Ezra A. Cross
By Sidney D. Eva
ARAH JANE HARE was born at
Matilda, Dundas County, Ontario,
on June 14, 1860. Sixty-two years ago
she became the wife of Ezra A. Cross.
They were married March 18, 1884. Together they immigrated to Michigan, and
in 1890, united with the Detroit Conference.
Mrs. Cross is remembered in the pastorates she served with her preacherhusband, as a gracious, kindly lady, who
demon strated the Christian life in her
daily duties, her personal relationships,
and' her home. She was devoted to the
work of the church, to which she gave
complete consecration. She was at home
in any depart ment of the church, and
served with a zeal and devotion, which
was completely divested of self. Her
gracious dispos ition and genuine love for
all for whom she felt a responsibility,
and who fell under her influence, are remembered to this day.
After serving for thirty-two years in
several pastorates in the Detroit Conference, she, with her husband, retired
and for the past twenty-three years
made their home in Fairhope, Alabama.
During that period, they came to Michiga n frequently to attend the Detroit
Conference, which they loved so deeply.
Those who have been privileged to visit
their home at Fairhope, were gracious!~·
welcomed, and the hospitality of their
home was generously dispensed.
After a: long and painful illness, Mrs. vCross died on December 31, 1945. Her .,
body was brought to Michigan for bt•rial.
Th"· funera l services were held in • Der,·oit, January 3, 1946. The ministers offic iat1ng were Rev. George W, Olmstead,
pastor of First Church, Highland P ark,
a church that Mr. and Mrs. Cross served
during their active ministry. Brother
Olmstead emphasized the hig h calling
of the minist r y, and how well and since rely Mrs. Cross had honored God in
the parsonage.
Dr. C. B. Allen shared in the service,
a nd spoke reminiscently of the years
and service in which Mrs. Cross had
served under him as District Superintendent.
Sidney D. Eva spoke on the Mission
and Ministry of Motherhood, and how
sincer ely Mrs. Cross had followed in the
foot-s teps of Mary, t he Mother of Jesus.
The devotion of her family was the
bes t testimony of her deeply religious
character a·n d her beautiful Motherhood.
Brother Cross was comforted in his
sorrow by their ch ildren, Mrs. H. B.
Smith, Merrill F. Cross, and Harry G.
Cross, of Detroit, and Hildreth M. Cross,
of Asbury College.
The buria l took place at Woodlawn
Cemeter y, Detroit, Brother Cross will
continue his res idence at F ai rhope, A la bama. The prayers of his many friends
accompany him.
