DONALD 0. CRUMM
Just before Christmas 1925, in my grandfather's farm house,
in Ida Township, I was born. However, I grew up in and attended
schools either in the city or township of Monroe, Michigan.
I quit high school in the fall of 1942 and went into a defense
factory. In June 1943, I joined the navy where I served until March
1946.
During the next two years, I completed my high school education and entered a local bank
expansion program.
St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church North was our family church home. During the pastorate
of Dr. Harry Howard I was moved to commit to full-time Christian service.
In the fall of 1948, I left work at the National Bank of Monroe and started studies at Adrian
College. It was here I met and married Barbara (Yunker) Crumm. After we had both graduated
from Adrian, we journeyed to Madison, New Jersey, and Drew Theological School, to spend three
years working on a Bachelors of Divinity degree, and two years working on a Masters Degree in
Theology.
Even before the commitment to Christ's ministry, I desired a family. During our Drew days,
David Mark was born. Over a period of thirteen years, Stephen Andrew, Shauna Sue (Wei!), and
John Joseph were born. They have been a great blessing and help over these years of service.
After the 1957 Annual Conference session, I was appointed to the mission church at Allen Park
which was meeting in a school gym. I was the seventh pastor in five years. We helped the
congregation build and move into their first building.
Then I served on the Westlawn Methodist Church staff, and in February 1963 was
appointed pastor of the Fremont Avenue Methodist Church, Bay City. Here we celebrated with
the people their Centennial, helped refurbish their sanctuary, finished excavating the basement
area, and replaced the brick veneer on church.
The next appointments were Southfield Methodist Church, Waterford and Goodrich
United Methodist Churches.
We were happy to serve ten and a half years in the Goodrich area. These years proved
the validity of Jonah's experience-God doesn 't give up on us.
At the end of December 1979 I was appointed to the Trinity United Methodist Church,
Sebewaing. This is a great church from the Evangelical United Brethren tradition. We helped them
retire one building debt, reroof their facility, and create an endowment fund.
From the Thumb I moved to the Hope/Edenville Charge with the expectation of working
in a cooperative parish. The last seven years and the 10-1/2 years at Goodrich linger in my mind
as the most fulfilling.
I am especially grateful for the opportunity to serve with colleagues and laity both within
and beyond the local church, such as in the old division of Church and Society, Greater Methodist
Union of Detroit, Board of Pensions, Endowment Fund, Wayne State Wesley Foundation,
Michigan Commission of Higher Education, Section on Higher Education, Section on Church
Extension, Flint District Board of Missions and Committee on Ordained Ministry.
I for a long time thought my calling was to a teaching ministry, but I am grateful to all past
conferences, teachers, colleagues and laity who have cared and assisted me in my faith journey
and fulfillment in the pastoral ministry.

I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things

And now, 0 glorious and blessed God

And the covenant which I have made on earth
let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Michigan Methodist leader Donald Crumm dies at 88
Niraj Warikoo, Detroit Free Press Staff Writer
12:01 p.m. EDT September 23.
201~
The Rev. Donald Crumm, a noted Methodist pastor in Michigan who led several churches and supported civil
rights, died Saturday at his home in Grand Blanc. He was 88.
The Rev. Crumm, who had been suffering from progressive supranudear palsy, a disorder similar to ALS, was
honored earlier this year (http://www.detroitconference.om/news/detail/1 040)as one of the state's oldest
Methodist pastors by United Methodist leaders.
"He was a scholar who walked the streets," said the Rev. Paul Blomquist of Clarkston. "He was consistently
dogged in his thinking, but humble in his daily acts of ministry ... one of the angels unaware."
The Rev. Crumm built or extensively renovated churches in Bay City, Allen Park and Goodrich, said David
Crumm, a son of the Rev. Crumm who is a former Detroit Free Press religion writer and currently editor of
(Photo: Family photo)

The Rev. Crumm also served as pastor in Detroit, Southfield, Waterford, Sebewaing, Hope, Edenville, Brent Creek and Northwest Venice.
In May, his granddaughter and David Crumm's daughter, the Rev. Megan Walther of Erie United Methodist Church in Erie (https://www.facebook.com
/pages/Erie-United-Methodist-Church/147540675288916), became the youngest ordained Methodist pastor (known as elder) in the region.
"As United Methodists in Michigan, we've looked for years to find signs of hope and growth in these difficult times for mainline (Protestant)
denominations" that face dedining membership, said David Crumm. "The news this year that ministry had spanned the generations in this family- from
the oldest to the youngest among our dergy in the state- was really an inspiring story of hope."
The Rev. Crumm was born in a farmhouse west of Monroe in 1925. He enlisted in the Navy, serving in the U.S. Navy Signal Corps in the Aleutian Islands
in World War II.
He decorated his car with a World War II veteran license plate on the back and a license plate on the front that read "United Methodist Circuit Rider."
"That car said it all: Serving our country and serving our church defined his life," said David Crumm.
The Rev. Crumm attended Adrian College lhttp://adrian.edu/), then Drew Theological Seminary (https://www.drew.edu/theologicaiD in New Jersey, and
was ordained for ministry in Michigan.
He was active in supporting diversity and civil rights for decades.
"Serving our country also meant building healthier, diverse communities," said David Crumm. "Since the 1950s, he actively supported civil rights and
groups that broke down bigotry and barriers to full indusion."
During the 1967 riot in Detroit, the Rev. Crumm helped families find loved ones they were separated from. He was a chaplain to people interned during
the unrest. And he was a big supporter of groups that sought to create unity and peace after the riots, like New Detroit, as well as interfaith groups and
the campus ministry at Wayne State University.
In January, United Methodist leaders gave the Rev. Crumm the 11 0-year-old Conference Cane, an honor for the oldest ordained elder in eastern
Michigan and Upper Peninsula who has served at least 35 years. In May, the Rev. Crumm watched a live video feed of his granddaughter being ordained
at Adrian College.
Michigan United Methodist Bishop Deborah Kiesey said the ordination represented hope for Methodists and other religious groups that they can continue
to remain relevant for future generations.
The Rev. Crumm also was an advocate for hospice care as he struggled with a degenerative disease. He lost his ability to talk in his final weeks, said
David Crumm .
"Even in the final year of his life, Dad was teaching us something about ministry and care giving," he said. "From that experience alone, we all learned
something about ministry from him."

"I think the worship services have
been very creative.
I've welcomed the
variety of things that
have been introduced: the mime, the
continued brass, and the guitar, this
year, amplified. Very great! We 've
had some different music, another
dimension with the new hymnal."
