Curtiss, minister of Brown City First United
Methodist church, was voted Associate Membership during the
129th meeting of the Detroit Annual Conference of the United
Methodist Church.
The conference wa s held June 11-15 on the
Adrian College aampus in Adrian, ruchigan.
' I on high school in Davison,
Rev. Curtiss gradua ted from DavJ1
a ttended Baker Business University in Flint, and received a
Supply Pastor degree from Garrett Theological Seminary in
Evanston, Illinois .
Beside his parish duties, Rev. Curtiss works on the YouthAlcohol and Drugs Study, Thumb Council on Alcoholism, and Sanilac
County Migrant Ministry.
Mrs. Curtiss is the fommer Maxine R. Klimkman, da ughter of
Mr. and Mrs . Cha rles Klinkman of Flint.
Rev. Curtiss is the
s on of Mrs. Nettie Curtiss.
The Curtiss• have three children, Christine, Corinne and
Celeste.

Curtiss, minister of the Omard and Brown City
United Methodist Churches, was received as an associate member
of the United Methodist Church during the 130th Detroit Annual
Conference.
The Conference was held at Adrian College in Adrian,
Mich. June 8-12.
The Revo Curtiss was also appointed to serve the OtisvilleRichfield United Methodist Churches for the coming year by
Bishop Dwight E. Loder.
Mr. Curtiss is a member of the Conference agencies of
youth-alcohol and drugs study.
He is active in the Thumb Council
on Alcoholism and the Sanilac County Migrant Ministry.

REV. AND MRS. BASEL C'URTISS are
being given an open house in honor of
their retirement on Sunday, April 24,
from 2 until 6 at First UMC, 828 Lapeer
Ave., Port Huron. Friends are invited to
attend. Curtiss served as a handicapped
test person for the army in 1942. He was
assigned to European Theater Command of Allied Prisoner of War
Intelligence supplying information to
Rev. and Mrs. Basel Curtiss
Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. Curtiss has
served as body guard to four presidents. Returning to civilian life In 1946,
he met and married Maxine R. Klinkman. She received her license of
Certified Lay Speaker of the UMC in
1979. Curtis has served such churches
as Linden UMC, Glennie-Curran UMC
and parishes at Owendale-Gagetown,
Brown Clty-Omard, Otisville-Richfield,
Petersburg-Deerfield and DeckervilleMinden City. He has done volunteer
work as a Big Brother, Volunteer in
Probat ion, and social worker. Rev. and
Mrs. Curtiss have three daughtersMrs. Randy (Christine) Vinande of Port
Huron, Mrs. Michael (Corinne) Gulash
of Davison and Miss Celeste Curtiss of
Flint, and six grandchildren. The
Curtlsses will be making their new
home at 312 Sanilac St., Sandusky.

of the marriage covenant. They were atte nded

Curtiss and M axine Klinkman we re married
September 25, 1948, in the Linco ln Park parsonage, Flint, by the late Rev. Floyd Sullivan.

o f the Rich field Ce nter Church , Daviso n, sang
a duet and the O ti sville ch oir sang a selecti on,
accompanied by Gordon Ba rden at the o rgan.
D aughters o f t he couple, M rs. Randy Vinande of Po rt Huron, and Corinn e and Celeste
at home , were hosts for the open ho use. A
reception was held in the church fellows hip
room w ith refres hments served to the many
guests by t he United Methodist Women and
Wes leyett e Circle.

M rs. Hub Ak kerman s of the Netherlands. Mrs.
Akkermans is a foster daughter thro ugh the
Youth for Understanding Program . She lived
with the Curtiss family at Glennie and attended
Oscoda High School.

announced by her
parents, Rev. and
Mr.;. Basel Curtiss
of Otisville. Mr.
Vinande is the son
of Mrs I>orolhy
Vinande of Brown
City and the late
George
Vinande.
Miss Curtiss and
her fiance are both
Miss Curtiss
graduates of Brown
City High School and students at St. Clair
County Community College, Port Huron.

wed ding anniversary open
house given by their ch ildren
and grandchildren on Sept. 26
in the Sandusky P resbyterian
Church . Basel W. Curtiss and
Maxine R. K.linkman were
m arried Sept. 25, 1948, by the
Rev. Floyd Sullivan of the Lincoln Park Methodist C hurch,
Flint. The couple's children are
Christine and Randy Vinande,
Port Huron; Corinne and
M ichael G ulash, Otisville;
Celeste and Dr. Timothy
McNally, D avison; Richard
Wayne Curtiss, deceased; foster daughter Dineke and Hub
Akkermans, The N etherlands.
They have nine grandchildren.
Basel and Maxine entered the
full-time ministry with the
D etroit Conference in June
1960. They served churches at
Glennie and Curran; Owendale and Gagetown; Brown
City and Omard; Otisville and
Richfield; Deckerville and
M inden City; and Decker
UMC. They served Presbyterian churches at Fraser, Cass
City and Ubly. Basel retired
from full-time ministry in 1983
and has since filled the pulpit
in the UM and Presbyterian
Churches when needed. H e

McKenzie M em orial Hospital
