at the l24th session of the annual conference being he ld on the
campus of Adrian College , Adrian, Michigan.

Rev. Damon has a l so. served I"lethodist Churshes in Lansing,
Michigan; Lakewood New Jersey; and Shardtown, Haines Neck,
and Woodstm'ln, New Jersey.
The son of Mr. and M1rs. Pal Damon of Adrian, Michigan, Rev:.
Damon is a graduate of Adrian High School; of Michigan State
University with a. B.A •. in 1961 and of Drew Seminary in Madison
New Jersey, with his B.D. degree in 1965.
Mrs. Damon is the former Joanne Edwa rds, daughter of Rev.
Joseph T. Edwards of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Rev. and Mrs. Damon
are the parents of two children, Laure l Jean, 6, and David
Wesley, 4.

THE REV. GARY L.
DAMON, 63, a retired pastor
from Westland, died Sept. 26 at
Angela Hospice in Livonia
after a long battle with cancer.
He retired Sept. 1 from First
UMC in Garden City, where
he had served since 1990. He
was born in Grady County,
Okla., and moved e~stwar?

His pastoral
career began
in 1959 at
Faith Haven

serve in N ew

seminary. Rev. Damon returned to Michigan in 1964 to
be assigned to Thoburn UMC
of Bay City. In 1968, he served
as organizing pastor at Christ
UMC of Bay City. In 1974 he
became the p astor at Peace
UMC in East D etroit, and in
1977, he became senior associate pas tor at Metropolitan
Church in Detroit. He became
pastor at First UMC of Howell
in 1986 before moving on to
Garden City. Some of his
favorite duties included working with couples in the church
marriage enrichment program
with his wife, Joanne. Rev.
D am on graduated from Michigan State U niversity and Drew
Theological Seminary in New
Jersey. H e also served as an Air
Force staff sergeant in the
Korean War. Gary was ver y
active in promoting Christian
education, botl1 in the local
church and throughout the
Conference. H e served as chair
of the Division of Family Ministries and was instrumental in
strengthening the Sunday
school programs in the parishes he served. Gary initiated
four building projects, which
included one new church start
and three education facilities.
He enjoyed traveling to
Britain, Romania and Israel
with Joanne. In addition t_o
Joanne, he is survived by hts
daughter, Laurel Ste~es, sons
David and Douglas, hts mother Leitha, three sisters, a
br~ther, and four grandchildren. A memorial service was
held Oct. 1 at Metropolitan
UMC.
