WALTER DAVID
,
A native Detro iter, I spent the early years of my life growing up in the city. In the mid-thirties
my family moved to East Detroit, recently named Eastpointe.
Following high school, our nation was still engaged in World War II, so I with many
classmates enlisted in the military. Following two and one half years of active duty I returned to
Michigan and became a Detroit Police Officer.
In 194 7 I married Dorothy Kadroh and the Lord blessed us with three children, who in turn
blessed us with three grandchildren.
As an infant I was carried to church in my mother's arms, and raised in the nurture of the
Christian community, so it was only natural for me to be an active layperson in my home church,
Messiah United Methodist Church, Detroit.
My entire career as a police officer was duty related to vice, gambling, liquor and organized
crime. Surrounded day in and day out by a moral degenerate society, I became more aware of the
fact that the only hope to change an immoral world is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I was encouraged by Dr. Ben Holme and Dr. Herb Hauser, and under their direction I began
my college studies and studies for the ministry. During those years I continued to work as a police
officer and served several United Methodist churches under part-time appointment.
In 1967 when my studies were completed, I resigned from the police departme nt and was
appointed as the organizing pastor of a new church in Sterling Heights, where I served for six years.
Ensuing a ppointments were Escanaba First-Bark River, Mt. Morris and Jefferson Avenue,
Saginaw.
I am proud to be a United Methodist, and will always be grateful that I have had the
opportunity and privilege to serve God's people through our system. I am not so naive to believe
that our system is faultless, but I challenge anyone to show me a religious organization which is
equal to The United Methodist Church.
Dorothy and I will be residing in Franke nmuth, Michigan, so if you happen to visit our city
as hundreds of thousands do annually, and if by chance you see an old preacher sitting on a bench
in front of the Bavarian Inn , listening to the glockenspiel, say "hello. "
