HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
The United Methodist Church of Warren was organized as the Methodist Episcopal Church of Warren on
November 26, 1845 by Oliver Barton, his brother
Isaac, their families, and a small fellowship of friends.
The small congregation met in homes, in a log schoolhouse at Chicago and Ryan Roads, and in 1852, their
first church building, a log chapel, was built at the
cemetery site on Chicago Road. Five years later, a
larger building was needed, and a frame building was
built. This frame church was later moved to the more
central location at Filmore and 7.th Streets.
Because of the growth of the congregation, a larger
church was needed, and land on Chicago Road was
purchased. Ground breaking ceremonies for the new
church were held on September 15, 1957, and, after
completion, the present structure, designed by
Minoru Yamasaki, has been the home of the congregation of First "United Methodist Church of Warren.

ABOUT OUR MINISTER
The Rev. Robert (Bob) Davis grew up in
the Pontiac area and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. He attended the
University of Michigan as an Evans Scholar, graduating in June, 1957, with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Sociology. His seminary work, done at
Garrett Theological Seminary, was completed in
June of 1962, with a Bachelor of Divinity degree.
Bob served two churches, Augusta and
Yorkville, while in seminary, then was transferred
to Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Detroit where he served as an associate for two
years. He has served in Whitmore Lake and in
June 1973 Bob came to First United, Warren.
Bob has served the Conference and District
in various capacities during his ministry.
The Davises have four children, Mark, Debra, Brian and Paul. They live in the parsonage on
Wellston.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNlFICANCE OF
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
OF WARREN
The garden surrounding the sanctuary is so placed
that we may see this growth and be reminded of the
necessity of personal growth. To live is to grow.
The window walls surrounding the sanctuary remind
us our Christian Faith must reach out to others. It
cannot be self contained and continue to exist.
The brick screen shutting us off from the hurry and
schedule of evecyday Jives is a reminder that to perfectly worship, both public and private, we must
withdraw from outside pressures.
C\l
0>

The suspension of the lighting system is borrowed
from European cathedrals ..and made · contemporary.
This is a reminder of our rich heritage from the past.
The high roof line over the entire congregation is one
continuous steeple above the worshippers, in keeping
with the Protestant thought '' every member his
own priest " .

Robert Davis

I

grew up in what is now Rochester Hills, Michigan, enjoying wide open spaces of woods, ponds, fields and streams.
Childhood memories included grea t times with neighborhood kids, an average fam ily with a younger brother, and a
wonderful experience in Central United Methodist Church,
then in Pontiac.

At age 16, at Lake Louise United lv1ethodist Camp, two lifechanging eYents occurred. I met a 14 ) ear-old girl, Sue
Zimmerma n, who iiwited me to play ping-pong, and who, six
years later I would marry. I also decided to respond to God's
ca ll into ministry and pursued that goal in the years to fo llow.
Upon completion of high school! attended the University of Michigan where
I was awarded an EYans Scholarsh ip covering n1y tu ition and room costs for
four years. From t-.,1ichigan I went to Garrett Theolog ical Seminary and graduated in 1962.
Sue and I were married in Oecen1ber, 1958, du ring her junior year at A lbion
and my second year at Garrett. I was also serving the Augusta and Yorkville
C harge, in th e \XIest Michigan Conference at th at time. Our first child , Mark,
was born while there, and in each of the next three appointments another
child was born; Debra, while assoc iate at Aldersgate in Redford, Brian at
W hitmo re Lake, and Paul in Ho lly. I have also se rved pastorates at Warren
First and Lake Orion and as Associate Council Director in both Detroit and
West Michigan.
The life of ministry has afforded us opportunities to grow and to love and care
for people. We are grateful for the places we h ave been appointed, the people
in the congregations we have served, and for the colleagues with whotn we 've
been privileged to work.
We will retire where our life together began , at Lake Lou ise, where we planned
and built o ur retirement home almost twenty years ago. We love to share the
beauty and tranquility of th is place with people we have kn own and loved
through the years. We look forward to visiting grandchild ren , traveling, playing golf, and whateYer the Spirit moves us to do. We are thankful each day for
the wonder of God's world and for the rich abundance of life together.
Our address is, 09844 Meadows Trail, Boyne Falls, Michigan 49713.
