Note:We are desirous of securing for the Historical files of the Michigan Conference complete and detailed
information concerning all ministers who have served and are now serving in the Conference. The above outline
is intended to assist in securing such information in more or less uniform outlines. We urge the addition, on a
separate sheet, of such other important and interesting information as cannot be conveniently placed on this blank.
In the case of men now living, the information can, of course, be only up to date. Photographs of living and deceased ministers, diaries, letters and documents of historical interest are earnestly solicited. Your co-operation
in behalf of the Conference Historical work will be greatly appreciated. Kindly return the blank to the Conference Historian.

AN

UNUSUAL BAPT ISMAL

SERVIEE

When I was serving the Gladwin Charge, Bethel and Emmanuel Churches, I
had an unusual experience.

One of the members of the Emmanuel, or Riley Church,

as it is called locally after the community name, called me to his home one
very bitter cold Saturday night in March, 1956.
and a faithful saint for many years.

He had been born in the ruggedly beauti-

ful Alps of Switzerland 88 years before.
bap tized by immersion.

He was a member of the Church

He told his pastor he wanted to be

And since it was the dead of a northern :t.1ichigan \·T inter

the only place for immersion v1as a bathtub, and that is
suggested.

~tThat

the good brother

The minister se.id he tofOUld do it, pray~ing that the Lord 'l'lOuld

give them both strength.

As he mounted the stairs, brother Peter suggested that we sing 11 Guide Me,
0 Thou Great Jehovah 11 •

That hymn never had more mea ning than at that moment.

To the aged saint it was a

s~bol

of the hope he had lived by through the years.

To the young mini Rter it was a prayer for guidance and divine strength.
morning Brother Peter had passed to be with his

~~ster.

Monday

I was glad that I did

not put off that request for such a strange baptism.
