CLIVE H. DICKINS
I was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Clara Barber Dickins and
Herbert Smith Dickinson January 24, 1930. We returned to Canada
and lived in Ingersoll and then in Windsor until my mother's death in
1933, when my father sent me to Detroit to be raised by my grandmother, Annie Barber, and aunts and uncles: Ellen and J ack Spicer
and Dorothy and Andrew Giwa.
Childhood and youth were spent in Detroit where I attended Sherrill Elementary and
Chadsey High School. In 1953 I graduated magna cum laude from Asbury College with a B.A.
degree and recognition in "Who 's Who in American Colleges and Universities." My B.D. was
earned at Oberlin Graduate School of Theology as Senior Class President and recipient of the
Monroe Fellowship for academic achievement and the Thomas Graham Prize for Preaching. A
Master of Divinity degree was awarded by Vanderbilt University in 1973 and graduate studies
were completed at Eastern Michigan University for a State of Michigan Teaching Certificate.
My conscious faith journey began on October 24, 1945, at Preston Methodist Church
when I first committed my life to Christ during the ministries of pastor Chester Stockinger and
youth counselor Betty Stanger Foster. Several nurturing life-long friendships came out of this
youth group , including Edward Weiss, Richard Barker, Frank Cowick, and Glen Eschtruth. Admission on Trial to the Detroit Annual Conference occurred in 1953 and led to appointments at
Stony Creek (53-58), Livingston Circuit (58-63), Denton-Sheldon (63-70), Chelsea (70-75),
Caro (75-83), and Alpena (83-95). During these pastorates three new churches were built and
a new parsonage acquired.
Grateful for the encouragement and joy that has come into my life through the ministry
of others I have tried to reflect that gratitude through service to the Conference and community.
I have served on numerous district committees and conference boards including: chairperson of
the Conference Board of Equitable Salaries & Sustentation, secretary of the Lake Louise Christian Community Board of Trustees, trustee o f Bronson Methodist Hospital and the Michigan
Christian Advocate. Recent community involvement includes Kiwanis president, Salvation Army
Advisory Board chairperson, Alpena Area Ministerial Association president, Sunrise Mediation
S ervice board member, Hospice Team member.
On June 25, 1972, Sally Guenther Gardner and I were united in marriage at Chelsea.
Our immediate family consisted of Lori, who died in a train accident in 1973; Mark, who lives in
Shepherd, Michigan , and is employed at Total Petroleum Refinery in Alma; Susan Rennie, who
lives in Roseville; Robert, who manages a bank in Eaton Rapids; and David, who attends Alpena
Community College and works at Alpena I. G.A.
God is the music in my life . Favorite hymns are: "Be Thou My Vision," "Great Is Thy
Faithfulness," "Blessed Assurance, " "Majesty, " and "Hymn of Promise. " Lifetime Scriptures:
Romans 8:28 and 2 Timothy 1:11-14.
Our retirement home is located at 102 Hitchcock Street in Alpena, Michigan.
