CANOEING IN GOo•s OUT-OF-DOORS
By---Harold w. Diehl
Midland, Michigan
March 1969
"Shove off!"
is the cry, and out into the stream
you go.
The paddles flash ••• • •
the canoe glides thru the water,
the banks slip away;
overhead a bird, startled,
flurries out of sight.
Your back arches, arms strain,
a broad sweep of the paddle and
a hard rudder in the stern,
the twist of the stream •••••
the bend in the river •••••
and you are quickly out of
sight and sound
of your companions
who trail behind you.
•
You and your shipmate
alone
must maneuver
your frail craft which
is simultaneously
stable and safe,
shifty and spilly, as you
round bend after bend;
always
beholding a new view,
a different terrain,
hazards unexpected and
confronting.
There are rocks
and stumps
in the river, fishermen, too;
low hanging limbs,
a fallen tree;
a bramble of branches on
the outside bank
where the whirlpooling current
compels your canoe.
And on and on and on you go ••• • •
hour after hour ••• throughout
the days of the trip.
Novice you may have
begun
but Novice not for long.
For soon
the skills of canoe ing
strike home,
become second natur e ,
and
you exalt
in exuberance
and exhilar at ion •• • •••
without exagger ation,
for you are Mas t er and Captain
of your craft .
•
When you have
shot your first rapids •••• •
holding your breath •••••
and come t o the calm
where t he water no longer
runs downhill to t he eye ,
you ~re a pt to
throw caution to the wind
and, s tandi ng uprigh t,
with a rms
raised to the heavens,
cry aloud for all t o hear:
"YIPPIE ! l l l "
The thrill
of your skill
in handl ing
your canoe
evokes t he cry, and
far into the night
you relive
those moments •••••
Life is different!
What care you
for sand in your f ood,
lumps under your bed-roll,
powdered milk, dried eggs,
spatter of r ain,
the heat of t he sun
••• that double burns,
by rays and reflections?
What care you?
What care you, for
you
lBve learned
the t hril l of canoeing;
you
have overcome the stream;
you
can hardly wa it
for tomorrow
and the ant icipat ed
unknown
around the next bend in t he river,
and the shout:
"Shove off!"
