and a s such was t he holder of t he Conf e t·ence Cane.

J an uary 12, 1862. H e was the s on 0 f
H e nry and Ca roline Di mond. He was
g radua ted from Olive t College a nd received the honorary degr ee of Docto1· of
Divin ity from Albion Co ll ege.

I ru had a very exciting campaogn when elected to coUnty

I has quit-e an unusua l experience with a farmwr on my
first charge.
I went into the field to call on
a
manand boys who were picking up corn to take to the
barn.
In the te ~ they were usin~ , one of the horses
had l~p ears. Its ears grew down by the side of the faae.
Quite unusuall but some times suah are seen.
The s team sta rted fyst as I was near ubobsered ~y the
man and the boys.
The man swore some thing furi•us at the
lep eared herse.
When I intereduced myself the
man was much embarrassed.
I invited h im to church.
During the winter I was h olding revivQl meething •
One
evening afye r p r e · Ching I gave the invitation
and
several came to the a ltar.
Ameng these there was a tall
mtgh with light coll~red hair.
As I took h im by the hand
I said t~ him , h a v e I seen you b efore and h e answered you feund me sw ar ing at that loped ear horse.
He wa s a
desperate wicked man. pr•fane and a drunkard and crule
w11en drunk.

From Mayville I went to Il&vet where I : ompleted the nor 'mal course under Pr~f. Estabrook. who had been at the head
of the state Normal t..en ~rears. . I WOI'krd wi t.h him in insti tute work and he induced me to come to olivet. I not only
took the normal c.ourse but s pecial c-ourses in Bi~logy, Chenestry Hi gher matimacs, ans Struc-tural Botany.
Latin. was
included in the Normal c. urse.
I then went to Laingsburg as sup, of the schools. I was
appointed County Sup. of sch ools.
to fill vac~~y.
Then I was elected for the full term
I resigned the position after servinc; about ll..wp ~rears and
e~ered the ministry.
I was received at the Cen~ral
in Flint ( then called garland Gt A ~ church ) After preach ina; ten years I W;a s appoint,ed to the church where I was :re ceived •

N CELEBRAT ION of his 88th birthday, Dr. E. D. Dimond was honored a t
Central Meth od ist Church, Flin t, Sunday, J a nua ry 9. As the preacher of
the moming he chose for his theme " A
Mor e Abundant Life." With a voice
that was clear and st eady, he preached
with the vigor and assu rance indicative
of the ministry of his earlier years.
Following the Sunday school hour, Dr.
Dimond was escorted to the church dining room, wher e h e was greeted by t wo
hundred present and for mer members
of the church, as tlley sang " Ha ppy
Birthday." The meal was brought t o a
close wi t h t he bir thday cake-cutting
ce remon y. The guest of honor wielded
t he knife w it h genuine skill.
The after -dinne r p rotp·a m was introduced with g roup s ingi ng . The youth
choit·, under t he direction of Mr. F red
Buckh alt er , min ister of mus ic, sa ng two
number s, "Praise My Soul, the King
of H eaven," by Mar k Andrews, and " The
Lord I s a Mig hty God," b y Mendelssohn.
Wo rds of appr eciation for the many
year s of sel'Vice rendered by Dr. Dimond
to Central Church, were expr essed by
James H. Varty and E . W. Jones. Followin g· brief remm·ks by the pres ent
pasto r, Rev. L. LaVerne Finch, Mrs.
Mabel Fa r row presented Dr. Dimond
with a beautiful bouquet of r ed roses.
Th e honored gue!;t responded with words
of deep ap prec iation, and t hen pronounced th e benedi ction, bringi ng to a
close a ver y ha ppy occas ion in th e life
of Central Church.
No m inister has ever been as sociated
wit h Central Church f or as ma ny years
as t he one honored on thi s occasion.
[n 1906 Dr. Dimond, just t en years a fter
his a dmittance into the Detroi t Conference on tri a l, was assigned to Central
Church, wlw re he served f or s ix year s.
