EXPERiENCE EXPERiENCE
An Announcement of Joy
By Susan K. DeFoe
!!)1..~/E"-j
I
AM EXCITED and nervous and eager
and afraid. I have trouble concentrating,
and have developed a foolish-looking
cheshire cat grin. I've been ordering furniture and gowns and photographs and
cake. I've had nightmares about invitations, caterers, and rehearsals . I feel pulled at once in a dozen different directions.
My once calm , well-ordered life has turned to chaos.
I'm getting married.
His name is Marshall Dunlap, and first
we were friends. I was assigned to be his
Counseling Elder when he graduated from
seminary and began serving the Thoburn
United Methodist Church in Detroit. Over
the period of a year we met regularly for
lunch, and we talked and debated and
helped and shared and laughed. Our relationship from the beginning was founded
on and shaped by a similar commitment
to Christ and to his church.
I always said that I would never
become part of a "clergy couple." To
marry another minister, I always said, is
exceedingly complicating, and can lead
too easily to competition, shop talk, and
martyrdoms. I still believe that. It is
evidence of God' s great sense of humor,
as well as God's insight and grace, that
when the right man entered my life, he
was and is a minister.
I love Marshall very much . He is the
most tender, delightful, supportive, strong,
funny, affectionate, and sensitive man I
have ever met. He is decent and honest
and wonderfully human . We laugh
together a lot. He is dedicated to people,
always ready to give of himself. He is a
good pastor, a good son, a good brothe r
,
a nd frie nd. 1
With Marshall! feel strong and safe and
bright and funny and beautiful and wise.
He respects my work and is not threatened by my skills. He helps me to express
and experience the very best parts of
myself, and he freely forgives and forgets
the worst parts. When I' m flaky he says
I'm cute, and sometimes when I cry, he
cries too.
I never rehearse my words or my actions with him . I am absolutely honest and
authentic when I am with Marshall. He has
seen the real, uncensored version of
Susan Kathryn DeFoe, and he is marry- .
ing me. His acceptance and unqualified
love have set me free in a way no human
love has ever done before .
I wasn't sure it would ever happen-my
marriage . At 33 I had made peace, real
peace, with my singleness. There are
many joys in that life. Yet Marshall was
suddenly, simply there. One day, after
another five-hour lunch, we decided to go
to . a movie (does this mean
"Ghostbusters" is "our song"?!) It was so
right, so comfortable, so exhilarating, such
fun .
He is one of God's greatest gifts to me.
He has offered all those qualities I most
need, and brought many I didn't even
know I needed- until him .
My friends enjoy him, my father trusts
him , my nieces adore him , my mother
calls him "my darling son. " He is surely
the answer to a lot of our prayers.
And so in February I will walk on Daddy's arm, and my sister Molly will lead my
way. And Marion from New York, and
Karla and Sharon and Betsy and Nancywho have been my best friends-will
celebrate my promises. And I will marry
th e m a n I adore.

Sisters
By Susan K. DeFoe
.J1J; .;.jtfy
L AsT SATURDAY my sister Molly and
I went out to lunch-just the t wo of us .
There were no children with us , no
parents, no other friends, just us. We
talked and laughed and remembered
and planned and dreamed . We shared
our hopes, our fears, our selves. And I
realized anew just how special my sister
is, how much I value and need our
closeness. For even if Molly wasn't my
sister, I would still love her, I would still
want to be her friend.
Molly is only 16 months my senior,
and so we have always played and
talked and laughed together. We grew
up side by side, sharing dolls and
records and clothes and a bedroom . We
very rarely argued , never seemed to
experience the intense sibling rivalry so
common to adolecence. The world
outside often confused us , but we knew
we could always depend on each other.
l':lo matter the age, Molly has always
" been there" for me. It was rather like
having my own best friend in permanent
residence. We would talk together after
the lights went out, and I could count
on her warm smile of support when we
passed in the hallway at school. She
was near enough to hold me when I
cried , was eager and happy to celebrate
my successes with me. In many ways,
Moll y has always been my best
defender and protector.
Her marriage almost 12 years ago has
not hindered our closeness of relationship. We contin ue to share our lives and
our time with each other; it just takes
more l intentionality now , more careful
planning , more driving time and phone
bills. Even so, as we mature so does our
trust and affection develop and
increase, and our very real need for each
other. It seems to get better and better.
She even shares her children with me, is
never threatened by the way her
children love their "Aunt Susie." She
even named her second daughter Emily
Susan after me.
And it's good to know, now that we're
both adults, that we don't merely love
each other. We like and respect each
other as well. Molly is one of the best
people I have ever known. She's warm
and thoughtful and accepting and
patient and giving-an altogether fine
Christian woman, and an absolutely
irreplaceable friend.
Yet, I do have other close friends
also, women with whom I share my
heart and my life and my time. I have
men friends too, but quite fran kly the
majority of my closest friends are
female. I suspect I have simply been
scarred by my own proclivity for
blighted romance. And the simple fact
is that the people who have rejected,
betrayed , and hurt me with the greatest
regularity have been male .
hJL-l,s ~ the,r~Jp...r~~J114-Cb: ...~~~~(J m..c?r~
comfortable and automatic to develop
intimate friendships with other women.
In my experience there is a deeper level
of understanding with other women, a
freedom from sexual tension, a willingness to talk openly, an ability to set
competition aside. There is a similarity
of life and history, a communication
w ithout speaking.
With my c losest women friends , I can
be my best. I feel freed from my
insecurities and together we are strong
and attractive and capable and wise.
Together we have the courage to live
lives of independence and risk. Together we are safe in our vulnerability. We
can hug, we can complai n, we can
dream.·We are not afraid to fail because
we are not alone. We are always ready
to challenge each other, always ready to
comfort, always ready to forgive .
It is my greatest tribute to them-my
women friends-that I consider them
my sisters. As Molly has been showing
me for 32 years, a sister is an
itt.

FAMILY NEWS ITEMS
It was nice to see the announcement of
the birth of Daniel Grant Dunlap so
promptly in the Advocate -apparently,
you picked up the news from
Metropolitan's Chimes which was in the
mail the day after he was born. (I still don't
know how Bill Quick managed to pull that
off!)
. For the record, his maternal grandparents are alive and well and active at the
Berkley United Methodist Church . Daniel
and Margaret (Mugsie) DeFoe share the
joy of being grandparents along with me .
Had Marshall and Susan been able to
send in the announcement, they might
have pointed out that their son 's name
comes from both grandfathers , Daniel
DeFoe and the late Grant Dunlap who was
a member of the Detroit Annual Conference until his death 21 years ago.
When I retired 3112 years ago, an Advocate article made reference to my smiling. I just thought I'd mention that I'm still
smiling-can anyone look at a beautiful
baby and not smile?
Thanks for reporting the happy news of
families as well as keeping us informed _
about our Christian responsibilities and
mission in our churches and the world.
