The Rev. Paul S. Durham, pastor of the West Side United
Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, retired at the 127th
session of the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist
Church on Saturday, June 15th at Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan.
Rev. Durham graduated from high school in Kansas City, Kansas
in 1915 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Baker University
at Baldwin, Kansas in 1920.
In 1922 he received his Bachelor of
Systematic Theology degree from Boston University School of Theology.
He has also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

MRS. R UTH DU RHAM, 71, wife of
Rev. Paul S. Durham, a retired member of the D etroit Annual Con!ference
and associate pastor at Utica, died October 2. She was born March 6, 1897,
in Republi'c, Mi ssouri. In addition to her
hu sband s he is s urvived by a daughter,
Mrs. William R o lt s~h; one brother, Paul
W. Simmons; and one sister, Mrs . Howard Howsley. Memorial services were
held at the First United Method ist
Church, Royal Oak, at 8 p.m., October
4 with the pastor, Rev. Everett K. Seymour, and Rev. Samuel F. Stout, pastor at Utica, officiating. Private buria l
was in Oa,kview Cemetery with the
Spiiler-Spitler Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements. The DUl·hams served
the ·Royal Oak church from 1950 to 1964.

JEAN B. PARKS were married in the
Utica United Methodist Church, Sterling
Heights, July 9, Rev. Samuel Stout officiating at the 7:30 p.m. ceremony. Members of the immediate family served as attenda nts and a dinner was h eld for the
wedding party in the Sheppard Inn,
Fraser . The newlyweds spent a two-week

Missouri, in Roya l Oak for 13
years, in Ann Arbor for five
years and in Utica for two
years . He wa s a Mason.

Heights; three step child ren,
David Parks of Nort h Carolina, Mrs. Laura Metzger of La nsing a nd Sa rah P a rks of

Kansas, J anua ry 30,
1896, he served
churches in Kansas,
Missouri, and Michigan - the last in
Missouri was for
i\1r. Durham
eleven years at the
County Club Methodist Church in K ansas
City. In 1950 he became pastor of the F irst
Methodist Church of Royal Oak and in
1964 was appointed to the West Side
Methodist Chu rch in Ann Arbor where he
served until his retirement in 1968. After
retirement he became the associate at the
Utica Methodist Church and the last few
months before his death he was the church
visito1· at the Nardin Park United Methodist Church, Farmington. His ministry was
marked by a deep dedication, a positive
conviction and always by e xcellent preaching. He was a splendid pastor and deeply
loved by all whom he served. During his
years at Royal Oak First the church went
through a considerable period of renovation to update its facilities, but wherever
he served he left the mark of the Christian way deeply imbedded upon his peo ple. Mr. Durham graduated from Baker
Unive rsity, Baldwin , K ansas, where he
received the A.B. and D.D. degrees, later
attending sem inary a t Boston U niversity
School of Theology. His first wife preceded him in death by several years. H e
is survived by his wife, Jean ; a daughter,
Mrs. Norman (Ruth Evelyn) Elliott; three
stepchildren, Mrs. David (Laura) Metzger ,
David J . and Sarah Parks; and one sister,
Mrs. Myrtle McClintock. Services were
held for the family in Royal Oak on the
morning of March 8 with memoria l services at First United Methodist Church,
rloyal Oak , at 7:00 p.m. They were u nder
