afternoon, June 6. Seated (from left): Wilma and Joseph

Detroit Retirees Share With Conference f;Jr'l?sADRIAN (MCA)-Each year the time
shared with the retiring clergy families is
one of the highlights of the Detroit Annual
Conference.
This year the Board of Ordained
Ministry supplied a booklet which included a biography and testimonial about each
retiree. This was appreciated by all, and
a helpfu l innovation copied from the West
Michigan Conference.
One of the observations this year's
celebration highlighted is that we really do
not know as much about each other as we
think. Each retiree revealed depths and
facets that were revealing to those wise
enough to stay.
Most seemed appreciative of the fact
that they would be hugging the bishop
after their speech. As Joe Ablett said, "I'm
QOing .tc>.-laug,Jbe.Bisho.p ....whelib l..get •.my,
flowers because I've never hugged a
bishop. I've never wanted to before!" he
said .
Retirees were introduced by Tom
Wachterhauser, spoke, were greeted by
Bishop Craig and received a chronometer from Karl Ziegler representing the
UM Foundation .
Some of the highlights include:
Joe and Wilma Ablett-Wilma said,
looking forward to seeing all the
adventures that are coming soon." She
also mentioned that their youngest
daughter was being married soon , and
that after the wedding, " I'm going to sit
in my rocking chair, and after several
months I may start rocking! " Joe expressed his gratitude to God, to Wilma, to conferen ce leade rs, fri ends, churc h
'Tm
Charles and Marion KitchenmasterCharles became a full-time local pastor in
1966. He mentioned that he stood on this
same stage to be ordained a local pastor.
Now, he said, "I'm flanked by a wife who
is much better looking than the ones who
were here then (including George
Spencer), and facing a bishop who is
much better looking than the one who ordained me! "
Roger and Josephine Merreii-Since
they met here at Adrian College it seems
proper to be retiring from here. They sang
a duet, "Our Tribute," about their feelings,
to the tune of " To God Be th e Glory."
Allen and Shan Rice-(See story, page
2.) Allen pointed out that he was retiring
a few years early to help MICAP financially, and was going to continue working
there. He challenged people to be involved in the issues raised by MICAP.
Lew and Clara Sutton-Lew wanted to
be known as one who " tried to be a people's pastor, for I feel that's where it's at."
Clara said, " I've tried first to be Lew's wife
and second, a minister's wife." She listed
the churches they had served and appreciated how each had let her do th is.
Lew pointed out how conference in his
early days of ministry started on Monday
evening and went through Sunday night.
Also , he said , "Two seminaries claimed
me. Iliff claimed I went to Garrett, and Garrett claimed I went to Iliff." All applauded
vigorously when he said , "This conference this week has been the most fun
conference I've ever been to!"
Robert Willoughby- Bob wants to be
known as a minister who " out his ideals
Bishop Judith Craig hosted a dinner for
Retired and Retiring Ministers and
Spouses following the presentation. 0

members, and all they had come to know
through the years.
Jim and Emmalyn Balfour-Jim
presented Bishop Craig with a "I'm a hug
therapist" T-shirt. He mentioned how the
suspense was no longer present when appointments are read (which isn't all bad).
"When I came into the conference, the
cabinet was still making appointments as
late as the Sunday night before conference, " he said.
Don and Doris Brown-He said, "I've
enjoyed serving among the small churches and found among the people there
a special kind of people. " He also gave
advice to the others since he has had five
years' retirement practice by being on
disability leave since 1980.
Keith Colby was unable to be present.
Ralph and Bettajean EdwardsBettajean shared a statement of all she
had enjoyed in their ministry together,
which especially included relationships
with others. She said, "If I had to do it over
again, I would ." Ralph mentioned that
when his retirement was announced at '
Rochester St. Paul's UMC, where he served as associate and resident dissenter
and local liberal, two important questions
were asked: 1. Who will take your place
on the softball team, and 2. Who will turn
off the lights after the meeting is over?

Robert Willoughby-Bob wants to be
known as a minister who " put his ideals
into social action." He mentioned that he
had two kinds of ministries ... twenty years
of Christian ministry in churches and the
last seventeen years in a teaching ministry
in high school and community college in
Highland Park.
