MICHIGAN PASTOR TO RIDE HORSEBACK TO
BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AT BALTIMORE
';/, J' - ~>r
EV. John R. Allan, pastor of First
Methodist Church, Croswell, will
represent Michigan Methodism in project
"Saddlebags East" in which 12 Methodist ministers from across the country
are traveling to Baltimore, Md., on horseback for the Bicentennial of American
Methodism, April 21-24.
Mr. Allan will r ide his own horse, a
Registered American Quarter Horse
Stallion, six years old, Palomino in color,
and known as Sparky Jo Bailey. Mr.
Allan was born on a farm near Pinnebog,
northwest of Kinde, and has specialized
in horsetrading since he purchased his
first horse - a foundered Appaloosa
plug named "Traveler" - at the age of
14. He boug ht the horse with $40 from
the sale of a n acre of beans on his
father's farm and money he earned cultivating. I n the six years he was serving as pastor at Farwell, before his recent appointment to Croswell, he bought
and sold some eigh t horses.
One of the youngest ministers par-
R
Rev. John Allan a nd his horse, Sparky
Jo Bailey.
ticipating in this project, ~ {Uan
graduated from the Elkton high school
in 1954. He married Karen Rapson of
Bad Axe in 1955. He sold his horse for
$75 to get enough money to enter college
and it was not until 1960 after studies at
Central Mich igan University and Garrett
Theological Seminary that he got back
to horses.
According to Mr. Allan the Baltimore
trip came almost as a joke when a friend,
who knew of his love for horses, said
he had found just the job for him. He
showed Mr. Allan a magazine article
about the project and dared him to enter
- wh ich he did.
Mr. Allan is scheduled to begin his
journey from the junction of US-24 and
US-25 west of Trenton the morning of
March 21. The first day's journey will
take him to Monroe and the second day
to Perrysburg, Ohio. Other overnight
stops are scheduled for Oak Harbor,
Sandusky, Lakewood, Mayfield Heights
and Orwell, Ohio; Greenville, Mercer,
Slippery Rock, Butler, Kittanning, Indiana, Armagh, Johnston, Bedford, McConnellsbm·g, Chambersburg and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Westminster and
Reisterstown, Maryland; arriving in
Baltimore April 21 between 3 and 5 p.m.
A few additional days are allowed for
possible unexpected delays. Mr. Allan
will stay in Methodist parsonages along
the way and speak in most of the nearby chu rches in the evenings.
Mrs. Allan plans to drive the family
car, pulling a trailer, to pick up her
husband and his horse at the end of the
trip. The Allans have two children Donald, 8, who according to his father,
is "not impressed at all with those
smelly horses," and Lori, 4, who "is
horse silly and a lways gets excited when
she is near them." Mr. Allan hopes to
be back in h is own church for Easter.
On their arrival in Baltimore the
horseback riding preachers are to be
honored at a "Saddlebags ·E ast" luncheon, April 22.
THE REV. JOHN ALLAN
of Marlette's First UMC was
honored on Apr. 23 as Marlette's 1998 Citizen of the Year.
H e was awarded the honor by

annual M arlette Chamber of
Commerce
Bu s ine ss

has served 19

Prior to Marlette, Allan served as pastor of
the Croswell UMC fo r 13
years and the F arwell UMC for
5 1/2 years. In addition to the

surrounding community. He is
