J. Arthur Appointed Superi ntendent

Bishop Edsel A. Ammons announces that Rev. J oy E. Arthur, 56, has been
appointed superintendent of the Detroit East District, effective September I,
1982. He succeeds Dr. Donald A. Scavell a, Sr. , who becomes executive secretary
of the Detroit United Methodist Union at that lime.
Arth ur is a gra du ate of Midland H igh School where he was active in 4-H C lubs
and Future Farmers of America. He received State and America n Farmer
A wards whi le a ttending school. He received his B.A. fr om Taylor University in
1954 and his Master of Divinity Degree from C hristian T heological Seminary in
I ndianapolis, Indiana, in 1958. Prior to his service in the United Methodist
C hurch, he was a fa rmer and was employed with a n industrial co rporation. H e
served Methodist chu rches in India na between 1953 and 1964.
He carne to the Detro it Conference in 1964 and served as minister of ed ucation
at Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw; in 1969 as pastor at Highland Park First. J oy has
been the pastor at Belleville since 1973.
In 1978 he led a delegation of
persons from both annual conferences
to India fo r a one-month study tour
a nd, in 1980 with his family, spent six
weeks as an excha nge pasto r under the
World Methodist Council, in Plymo uth, E ngland. In J anua ry 1982, he
was o ne of 13 mem bers of the Ann
A rbor District to go to Haiti and
part icipate in a nu mber of building
p roj ects on behalf of the people in the
mountain area of P eti t Goave.
Ar thur has served on several district
a nd conference committees including
the town and country committee, and
the Board of Ministry, and currently is
president of the A nn Arbor District
Board of Missio ns and C hurch Extensio n.
H is wife, Dorothy, is a reading/
mathematics consultant with the public schools in Belleville. They have a

Church's Board of Global Ministries for a
two-year venture in mission. Following the
orientation seminar in Washington ·n .c., she
was assigned to Moore Community House in
' Biloxi, Miss. The inner-city mission is related
to B.O.G.M., U.M.W., Mississippi Conference and The United Way Community

SPRING JOY ARTHUR AND THOMAS
KILMER JACKSON were married on April
28 at Belleville First UMC. The bride is the
daughter of ~ev . Joy and Dorothy Arthur

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas K. Jackson
of Southfield. The groom is the son of
Robert and Antoinette Jackson of White
Bear Lake MN. Officiating at the
ceremony were Rev. Arthur and Rev.
Leland E. Penzien . Molly Ann Wiarda of
Jackson, a friend of the bride , was the
maid of honor, and David Jackson of Minneapolis, the groom's brother, was the
best man . The bride's brother, Stephen
W. Arthur, gave her away. A reception was
held at the Ramada Inn of Detroit
Metropolitan Airport. Mrs. Jackson attended Adrian College and Michigan State
University, receiving a B.A. in education.
Mr. Jackson attended the University of
Minnesota in Duluth . He received a B.A.
degree and an Associate Degree in
business. The couple took a one-week
wedding trip to Cape Coral, Florida. J hey
will make their home in BellevilleP/ I.P;:l
