PATON M. ZIMMERMAN

I was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1925, the child of parents
who had gone to the Middle East out of a sense of mission. Mother
had gone to work for her uncle who ra n a printing press for the
Near East Mission and Dad had volunteered as a member o f the
Menno nite Near East Relie f. They met, married, went into business
together and raised four children, two boys a nd two girls. We children attended the American
Community School.
We left Beirut in 1938 when war in Europe threatened and lived first in Madison, Wisconsin , and then Buffalo, New York , where I completed high school in 1942.
I graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint in 194 7 where I received a BME,
having worked ha lf of the time in Linden, New Jersey. I came to work in Detroit at the Fisher
Body Division of GM.
I was invited by dear friends to attend Westlawn Methodist Church in 1949. Attracted by
the preaching o f Dr. Benjamin F. Holme, I joined Westlawn on Ash Wednesday 1950. It was at
Westlawn that I met my future wife, Virginia Mae Yount, when we were both active in the
Wesley Fellowship Class for young adults. We were married in June 1951.
At Westlawn, Ginny and I counseled Intermediate MYF and the o lder youth group and
both o f us sang in the choir. I taught adult Sunday School and served as Secretary of the Official
Board and chairperson of Church and Society. Finance and Lay Leader.
We were blessed with five wonderful children, Paton Jr., David. Bradley, Virginia Jr. and
Elizabeth. All were baptized a t Westlawn a nd played active roles in the life of the church.
In 1972, our family transferred to Central UMC in Detroit, drawn by the pastoral leadership of
Dr. Richard C. Devor and Daniel Krichbaum. Again , we sang in the choir and both Ginny and I
assumed various leadership positions.
Having become active in the church at a District a nd Conference level ( I chaired the
Board of Church and Society), I was elected to serve on the General Board of Church and
Society where I served for two quadrennia. I was elected a lay delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences in 1976.
In 1977, encouraged by my wife, Dr. Devor and Dr. Royal Synwolt, I chose to take an
early retire ment from GM where I had worked for th irty-five years and attained the position of
Engineering Supervisor. I was accepted at the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington,
D.C.. and began studies there in August 1977 while serving a three-point student pastorate in
Port Deposit, Maryland. Two of our churches were White, while one was a historic Black church,
founded by Bishop Coke in 1789. While their pastor, the church burned and we rebuilt and
consecrated a new building in 1981 just before we le ft Maryland to return to the Detroit Conference.
Following graduation from Wesley in 198 1, we were appointed to serve the Glacier Way
UMC in Ann Arbor where we pastored until 1990, when we came to the Wesley UMC in
Warren, from which we retire.
Our children are all married a nd we have nine wonderful grandchildren. We plan to live
in the Detroit metropolitan area where we can enjoy our family.
