Statement to Conference:
I am very thankful to become a full member of this Annual Conference. It is my prayer that I
will challenge young people to answer the call of ordained ministry, just as Rev. H .H . Patterson
and Rev. Terry Euper did for me.
The Call
The Rev. Jill Zundel was not brought up in the church. "I watched the
'King of Kings' movie on Easter and got out the Bible," she says. "I would
make minister puppets.
"In sixth grade a woman named Mrs. Chapelle invited me to come to
Sunday school at Berkley UMC; so I started attending - my family, too,"
she said. "I felt I was supposed to become a minister, but was told women
couldn't do that."
After high school Zundel served as a volunteer Christian education director. "I tried to make that my niche, not working. My parents encouraged me
to go to Big Beaver UMC in Troy as youth director. I worked at the post office, got in with the
wrong crowd, and ran away from church."
Seven years after graduating from high school, the Rev. Terry Euper asked Zundel to take a
youth group down to Ichthus. There they toured Asbury College in Kentucky.
"I was crying," she says. "I knew I was supposed to be there."
Subsequently, Zundel attended Asbury College and sem.itlary and served Detroit Zion UMC
for two years. This is her seconJ year at Hazel Park First UMC.
"In Kentucky, I worked with at risk youth," she says. ''Now I am empowering the laity to do
the work of ministry. High mountain experiences do not happen as frequently as before. Now it's
a vision for ministry of a city. One-on-one discipleship doesn't happen too often here," she concluded.
