filfred t Bamsey (Karen)
I was born in Detroit, the eldest of four
children, two boys and two girls. Except for three
years in Pennsylvani a all my growing up years
were in Detroit until I hit high school. The family
moved to Royal Oak when I turned fou rteen and I
graduated from Royal Oak High School.
It was while in Royal Oak that I became very
involved with the Methodist Youth Fellowship and
developed great relationships with an Associate
Pastor and a Director of Religious Education at
First Church. That church was the incubator for
my movement toward becoming a pastor.
I attended Albion College where I had a great
experience. Then I graduated, got married, and
attended Union Theological Sem inary in New York
on a dare. There great professors who presented
Christianity with great intellectual vigor coupled
with deep personal faith challenged my
agnosticism. I needed the balance of head and
heart and when I discovered both in them I became
convinced I could be a pastor.
My first full-time appointment was as the first
Associate pastor of Grosse Pointe United
Methodist church. I will never forget the
graciousness of that congregation as it nurtured my
immature ministry. Furthermore, I will always
treasure the teaching and nurture I received from
the Seni or Pastor, Jim Nixon, and his family
during my time there. It was also there that I
learned firsthand about the Civil Ri ghts
Movement, participating in local marches, bei ng
involved in a "kneel-in" at a Jackson, Mi ssissippi
church and attending the March on Washington
where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his now
famous "I have a dream" speech. That whole
experience shaped my theology for the rest of my
ministry. It was also there that my first son, Scott,
was born.
Nex t came Bethany. a beat-up inner city
Detroit Church, where I ministered joyfully for
four years. The Detroit riots happened while I
served there and I remember many rac ial
encounters inside and beyond the church that
impacted my understanding of min istry. My
second son. Craig, was born while I pastored that
congregation.
For eight
years I was the
pastor of Troy
First United
Methodist
Church. For
many reasons I
fe lt like I truly
grew up as a pastor while I served those fine
people. In many ways it was the happiest
experience of my ministerial life. People there
mentored me into maturity. I shall ever be grateful
for their trust in me.
I spent six years as a District superintendent in
the Detroit West District. I learned a lot about the
larger church because of that assignment. I worked
with bishops up close and personal, and fou nd out
how fine and how miserable some congregations
could be. I went through a divorce during that
period and also remarried. The times were stressful
in many ways, though I came out of it with a
terri fic new spouse, Karen, and two additional
children, which she brought to our mmTiage.
Eight years as Counc il Director fo llowed. I
enjoyed those years. The position offered me the
opportunity to see the church from a broad
perspective and allowed me to develop some
specialties in ministry that have served me well.
Helping to give the Detroit conference direction
and engaging churches in confl ict management
gave me a sense of providing meaningful ministry.
Then I was asked to go to Ann Arbor First. For
me it was the onl y appointment in the annual
conference that really interested me, so I count
myself lucky that Providence and my desires
coincided. These past ten years have been fu ll of
learning and challenge, as I've attempted along
with my colleagues and a great collection of laity
to lead this church into the twenty-first century.
While there is still much to be accomplished I
fini sh my tenure at First Church with a strong
sense that I have contributed to its well being and
to the promise of its future.
