Rev. Carl E. Buerkle

By Frank l\1. Field 3~ .ili1'l

VETERAN of fifty-four years in
the Methodist ministry and active
in his beloved work a s a pas tor to the
very last, Rev. Carl E. Buerkle was suddenly called ft-om his labors Friday, December 17, 1948. He wn s in hi s third
year a s pas tor of the Flint Park Methodist Church in Flint and at the time
he was stricken was on his way to the
hospital to visit one of his parishioners.
Although he was retired by the Detroit
Annual Conference in 1945 he continued
to serve actively as a pastor and was as
enthusias tic about his work as when he
I was serving s ome of the lead in g churches in the Central German Conference in
the height of his career.

A

Carl E . Buerk le was born in Marbach,
Germany, in 1873 a nd came to the
United States when he was fourteen
years of age. Having had some t raining
as a baker's apprentice in the old country, he worked in a bakery shop in Philadelphia while he was getting his high
school education. While still in his youth
he received a very definite call to the
ministry, impress ed that "man does . not
live by bread alone," a nd feeling t hat
God wanted him not merely to bake
bread but to dispense the "Bread of
Life" in a hungry world. He received
training for the ministry in BaldwinWa ll ace College at Berea, Ohio, and was
\r eceived into the Central German Conference in 1895.
His first pastorate, which began in
December, 1894, was at Kochville Methodist Church, near Saginaw, Michigan.
While servi ng t here he also organized a
congregation at Freeland and led in
building a church, working with his people in manual labor upon the new structure. It was while pastor at Kochville
that he found hi s life long companion
a nd on July 20, 1898, the young pastor
married Mary Ann Marti, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Adam Marti, Saginaw
County pioneers. They celebrated their
golden wedding an niversai-y last July.
Transferred to Ohio in 1898 Mr.
Buerkle served eight pastorates in that
state, with a six-year interlude in the
Ohio Str eet Church, P ittsburgh, ]?a. The
Ohio pas torates were Monroefield, New
Knoxville, Pomeroy, Marion, Bucyrus,
Hamil ton and Akron. At Marion he had
a significant seven year pastorate and
enjoyed a close· personal friendship with
Warren G. Harding, later President of
the United States. An unusua lly successful pas torate at Bucy rus was marked by
the building of a magnificent church
building at a cost of $80,000.

Bishop Raymond .1. Wade, left, congmtulatcs Rev. Carl Ruerl<le on his 50th
anniversary as a Methodist minister.
· The picture was talten in the Bdstol
Church, F lin t, Sunday, November 26,
1944 , at a celebration in honor of the
occasion.
Returning to Michigan in 1929 Mr.
Buerkle served a seven year pastorate at
Pigeon and in 1933 went with his church
into the Detroit Conference by the Cent ral German Conference merger. A six
year pastorate in Tuscola St. Church,
Saginaw, was followed by four years in
the Bristol Church, Flint. Here, in November, 1944, his church and numerous
brother ministers helped him celebrate
the ·r ounding out of fifty year s in the
Methodist ministry. This did not mark
the end of his career, however, for even
though his r etirement age was reached
at the end of that year, he continued to
serve the charge for a yea r as a r etired
s upply and then Flint Park Church ,
Flint, fo r two and one-half years. During
these two pastorates Rev. and Mrs.
Buerkle lived in their own home at 1424
Oak St., Flint.
Besides Mrs. Buerkle, he leaves t h ree
sons, William, at home ; L. Herbert of
Indianapolis, Ind.; Cad, Jr., of Mt. Vernon, Ill. ; and a daughter, Mr s. Hoy W.
Wagner of Urbana, 0.; also a brother,
E. G. Buerkle of Bakersf ield, Cal.
In the Kochville Church, Saginaw,
where Mr. Buerkle began his ministl-y
fifty-four years ago, funeral services
were cond ucted on December 20 by Dr.
Frank M. Field, Saginaw Bay District
Superintendent, who was Mr. Buerkle's
superintendent when he \vas pastor at
Pigeon. Assisting were r epresentatives
of three churches which Mr. Buerkle
had served, Rev. Alfred Huntct· of Kochville, Rev. H. E. Duttweil'er of Pigeon,
and Mr. Harold Karl s of Tuscola St.,
Saginaw. Rev. E. F . Hildebrand offered
prayer at the grave in the Kochvillc
cemetery.
Earlier in the day the many friends
.and fellow pastors in Flint had an opportunity to pay their r espects in a service
