REV. RICHARD E. BURGESS died
i\larch 12 f ollowing a two month illness .
He was the pastor of Faith Methodist
Church, Oak Park. Mr. BuTgess was
born on June 24, 1933, at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He manied the former
M-arilyn L . Brackett of Detroit to which
union was born three children, Linda
Ann, Cynthia Lee and Mark Stephen.
After g raduating from Albion College in
1956 wi th an A.B., he g ra duated from
t he Grad uate School of Theology, Boston
University with a S.T.B. in 1960.
Mr. Burgess had been a m ember of
Metropolitan Methodist Church, Detroit,
from March 21, 1948, until June 1956, at
which time he became a member on trial
of the Detroit Annual Conference and
then was received into full membership
in June 1960. The churches he served
included Jerome (Michigan Conference),
Moosup, Connecticut (New England
Southern Conference), Warren Valley,
Dear born Heights, and Faith, Oak Pa rk.
He was currently the Detroit District
Secr etary of Evangelis m and Sect·etary
of the Detr oi t Conference Board of
E·,,angelism. He a J.s o was a member of
the Detroit District Committee on Ministerial Qualifications.
H e is s urvived by his wife and children,
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J am es Burgess,
Hig hla nd Park, and a sis ter, Mrs. Beverly Sullivan, also of Highland Pm·k. A
memorial service was held at Metropolitan Methodist Church on March 15 with
Revs. Robert L. S. Brown, Samuel C.
Siezert, H erbert F. Hauss er participating and Bishop Dwight E. Loder preaching the memorial sermon. The choir of
Faith Methodist Church sang "Open Our
Eyes" by MacFadane. Interment was at
Woodlawn ·Cemetery wi thin a few f eet
of the g rave of Dr. Ches ter A. McPheeters, who gTeatly influenced Dick's
entrance into the Christian Ministry.
