IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Please
The Rev. Alvin Burton entered into retired relationship
with the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church at
the 130th Session of the Conference which met on the campus
of Adrian College in Adrian, Mich. on June 8-12, 1971.
Rev. Burton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burton of
Waynesboro, Ga.
He was recommended for license to preach by the
charge conference of Scott Memorial United Methodist Church in 1924.
The Rev. Burton, a graduate of
Cass Technical High School
of Detroit, received his high school dipolrna in 1925, his BS degree
from Boston University in 1932 and was granted his BDiv degree from
Boston University School of Theology in 1935 .
Mr. Burton was received into the Lexington Conference of the
Methodist Church as a Probationary Member in 1934 and as a Full
Member in 1936 .

He transferred into the Detroit Conference in
Rev . Bur ton ha s served on the board of the United Methodist
Childr en's Horne , Confer ence Homes Retir ement Board, the Publishing
Interests Board , and the Confer ence Committee on Nominati ons and
Per sonnel .

Mr. Burton served as assistant pastor of Union Methodist
Church in Boston, Mass. during his student days.

Mrs. Burton, 58, died Sunday
at Henry Ford Hospital.
She was the director of federal and state programs for
Romulus Community Schools.
She was the f i r s t black
teacher and the first black
principal in the R o m u I u s
School district.
I Mrs. Burton is survived by
her husband, the Rev. Alvin
Burton; a daughter, Jackie;
her mother, Mrs. Dora Rowe ;
six sisters and four brothers.
