I

was born in Pontiac, Michigan, to Verda and Harper
Dunlap on July 14, 1930- a child of the Great Depress ion.
We liYed, what was then, way out in the country on
\XIalnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield Township.

l was baptized as an infant in the Walled Lake UMC.
Neighbors rook me roan interdenominat ional church which
was held in the West Bloomfield Township Hall.
EYen as a fi rst grader, l walked one mile to school each day
armed with my lunch sack which always contained a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich.
My sch ooling also included Jr. and Sr. High in Pontiac, Michigan State
University, Oakland University (BS), United Theological Seminary (M. Oiv.)
and Ecumenical Theological Seminary (D. Min. nearing completion.)
God graced o ur family with four wonderfu l children: Edwin James Welch
(deceased), Rev. Pat C arol (a Unitarian Universa list District Superintendent
in Washington DC, Baltimo re and Phi lade lphia District), Lee Welch (Store
manager in BurlingtOn, VT) and Elizabeth Welch- Wolfe (mother of Olivia
Celeste).
A fire kindled in my soul at my home church in Wa lled Lake where I was se nsitized to race and poverty issues. The fire was rekind led in my first appointment ro the Caro UMC when I becatTie intensely involved in peace issues. I
am proud ro h ave served, what was then, the Board of Connection al Outreach
as Sec tion Superviso r of "Women 's and Emerging Issues." We actually sponsored the first women's co nference attended by clergywo men and laywomen
from four Conferences.
My sixteen years of service also included the Burto n (no w Phoenix) and
Pontiac First Church.
Cleg Bordeaux and I were married last A ugust 31, 1996. He is retired and we
plan to trave l.
Our new address is 664 Nichols, Auburn Hills, Michigan 48226.
