Wi lliam Hayes Fa i r ch ild--Obit u a r y .
William Hayes Fairc hild, s on of Samuel an d Hattie Fairchild, was ~
born n ear Alvordton,Ohio, Novemb er 1 4 ,1886. Reared in ~he community of
his birth, he received hi s ea rly educ ation in t he rural school near
his home and in the high s chool at ~ lvo rdton. After spending several
yea rs in the mini s try his desire to fUrther prepare hims elf for his
hig h calling led him to enter the Evangelical Theologic al Seminary from
which he graduated in 1926.
March 9th,l907,under the mini s try of Rev. O.P.Schleicher,he v1as
converted at the Clay Church of the ff est Unity Circuit. Uniting with
the church immediately after his conversion he served as class leader,
assi s tant superintendent of the Sunday School and as a Sunday Scho~l
teacher. He soon became conscious of a eall to the Christian ministry
tnd in lj08 definitely surrendered his life to the will of God. He was
recomme~~d by the Clay congregation and licens ed by the Michigan Confer ence in 1910. He was adva nced to the orders of deacon and elder in
1912 and 191~ res pectively. Accepting appointment by the Conference
in 1910 he served in the minis try for almost 30 years without a break,
ex cept for a fe w months in 1927.
Hef s erved the follo wing appointments for the periods indicated,Greenwood 1910-l2,Erie l912-l3, Whitehouse 1913-15, Maple Grove 1915-17,
Epsilon 19l7-22,Scottville 1922-24, Northfield,Ill.( s tudent pastor)
l92 4-26, Ryegate, Mont.(Nebraska Conf)l926-27,0wendale 1927- 2 9, ~rown
City l929-3l, Whittaker l93l-34, Sharon l934-38,South Rockwood 1938-40.
During his pastorate at Epsilon a parsonage was erected. At S6uth
Rockwood, where he was enjoying a Vjl~uccessful pastorate, plans were
under way for the cons truction of ~basement, money for the project
having been pledged.
A
.i1s a pastor he was faithful to his task and devoted to the best
interests of his people. At has ~ast quarterly conference he reported
a larg e number of calls made on his people in the weeks immediately
preceding . In recognition of his faithfulness his Conference had
honored him for several years with the chairmanship of the Committee
on ~uarterly Conference Records.
May l5th,l912 he was united in marriage to Miss Pauline Radushel
who sympathetically shared with him the joys and sorrows of the Gospel
ministry for more than 27t years. ~heir marriage was bless ed in the
birth of a daughter, Mildred Hazel who was taken by death September
27th,l935,at the age of 22 year s .
For about a year Brother Fairchild had not enjoyed the best of
health though he had been able to attend to his ministerial duties.
A recent visit to his phys ician indicated that his condition was more
serious than his friends had reason to suspect. Sunday January 2lst ;/f~q
he went to his ~~~ ~ Newport Church. While preaching
he was s tricke~
pew of the church where he
breathed hi s l a st within a fe w minutes, and before medical assistance
coul d be secured. He died preaching t he Go s pel he loved and minm~ter
ing in the n ame of the Christ whose s ervice he counted as his hi~hest
joy. He died,as he probably would have cho s en to die, busy at his
Ma s ter's work. He was faithful unto death.
n e l eave s to mourn their lo s s,hi s loving companion,several
nieces and nephews, his sorrowing congregation, his beloved brethren
in the 6onference,one of whom, Rev.G.Ra dushel,is gis brother-in-law ,
and a ho st of feiends.

"Goodby,till morning come again,
We part,if part we must, with pain,
But night is short, and hope is swwet,

And so we sing the old refrain,

But could we know how short the night
That falls and hides them from our sight,
Our hearts woul d s ing the old refrain,
"Goodby, til1. morning come again."
