Bishop appoints Detroit West D.S.
A_
JAtf18 ~31fC~-
The Rev. Juanita J. Ferguson
will become the Detroit West District superintendent on June 16,
as announced this week by
Bishop Donald A. Ott. She will
succeed the Rev. Merton (Mike)
Seymour who is completing a sixyear term as district superintendent, and who will receive a new
appointment in June.
Juanita is presently serving as
an associate pastor at Birmingham First UMC, a position she
has held since June 1990.
THREE OF her previous five
appointments have been in the
Detroit metropolitan area, namely, Cass Avenue (associate); Ford
Memorial and Redford (senior
pastor) . She also served
Wellsville, and Springville
congregations.
Juanita was ordained an elder
and became a full member of the
Detroit Conference in 1975 following a required two-year probationary period . She is a graduate of
Adrian College 1965, B.A.; Wayne
State University 1967, M.Ed .; and
Methodist Theological School in
Ohio 1974, M.Div.
She is an avid Detroit Tigers
fan and a competitive ping pong
player. The Detroit Symphony and
Jazz concerts also provide areas
of interest and activity for Juanita.
IN MAKING this appointment,
Bishop Ott said: "Juanita is a
visionary and activist who will
bring to the superintendency of
the Metro Area the vital qualities
of credibility from her ministry
record and strength bome of a life
of prayer.
"Th~ district superintendency
comm1ttee urged me to appoint a
person who could do 'hard thinking that results in growing ministry' and one who would 'form
partnerships and other forms of

Highly educated women are

women.
Some of
the
most
problematic people have been
women who have not worked
outside the home. It takes the
blue collar churches longer to
warm up to a woman preacher,
but when they do, they work
very hard with them. At first
they say, "What has God/the
Bishop done to us? Why do we
deserve this?" With older,
long-established congregations
it's harder to accept a woman.
I wait for the day when I get
to follow a woman.
