Haldon Da Ferris
I discovered it was very easy to contemplate the last 43 years of my ministry. Over that time, I have
served nine churches. That sounds like a lot, but I began preaching at the Cloverdale Evangelical United
Brethren Church (this church is no longer in existence) when I was just 19. I served 3 other churches
while in college and seminary, graduating from the former E.U.B. seminary in Naperville, illinois. One of
those churches merged with another E.U.B. congregation and built a new church building.
It was during those seminary years that the denomination began to move from a Bachelor's degree
to a Masters of Divinity. I received a Master's of Divinity in 1967. At the conclusion of my seminary
training, I moved to Livonia and the rest is recorded in the journal.
I have loved the ministry. Never once did I doubt I was called to preach and teach. There were many
times I wondered if I was worthy. And, there were other times when I wondered why the presiding
Bishop sent me to "that place???" But every time I moved and adjusted to a new congregation, I could
see the wisdom of the Lord and the Cabinet.
Of the personal highlights of professional life was the year I graduated with a Doctorate of Ministry
from Drew University, Divinity School. It was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend this
school to my colleagues.
What a wonderful life this has been for me. I will miss preaching and teaching (although I will be
doing some of this for Kathy, my wife - working part time for Saginaw, First). What I won't miss are the
late night meetings.
I look forward to retirement and spending time fishing, improving my golf swing, playing with the
grandchildren, and building the addition on our cabin up north at Birch Lake - near Elk Rapids.
Thank you for the wonderful 43 years of ministry. I have been greatly blessed.
