nearly every capa city . My father, J e s se Fler.ling , directed the financial
drive f or the r emodeling of our h ome church in 1950 ..
My parents have b e en in busine ss for many years , my father having
be~ a family business in the 1 930 ' s .
Much of my understanding of
human relationship s and dynami cs deve l oped out of e arly exposur e t o
business and acconpanying my father on weekends and schoo l vacati on s
dur in~ my youth .
My grandfather , the Rev . Floyd Jvi .. Barden , enjoy ed many f ulfilling
year s in t he ? astorat e as minister of the EUB churches of the Sodus Circuit e

I bel ieve t hat the fa ct that in church experienc es and in summer
camp in~ expe rience I ·was confronted with a God who calls and
t his God a l vvays se emed to b e calling me into the r.2in istry was a vital
fa ctor in d irecting me t oward s e ri ous consideration of the past orat e .

Evang elica l Theoloe ica1 Seminary were very rich. Th e cal l to involvement
and s ervice, the ca ll t o s acrifice and servantho od came increasingly sharp
and clear du rin~ these years . My colle ~ e exn eri en c e pr ovided an int ellectua l
base for a br oadening f aith., My seminary experi enc e ext ended the
intellectual base and pr ovi ded a compatib l e existential base . Her e I wa s
int imat ely exposed to men wh o were not only intellectual g i ants but who
were a l so men of the Su irit, men of f ait h, men of high emotion . I n new
ways during the se years I came t o a ·1preciate and ever experi enc e more
f ul ly the rich t radi tion of f ai th which c ame to us through Otterbein,
the fa ith of head and he.art .
