0. Ellinger was retired at the June 4-7 sessions of the
Detroit Annual Conference of the united Methodist Church held at Adrian College,
Adrian, Michigan.
•
He has been serving as Pastor since June 1972 of the First
united Methodist Church, Alpena, Michigan .
Rev. Ellinger was received on trial in the West Michigan Annual
Conference in 1939, and in 1941 was received into full connection.
During his
years of service in The West Michigan Annual Conference, Mr. Ellinger served
at Three Oaks, Lawton, Bellaire and Frankfort.
In 1954 he transfered to the
Detroit Annual Conference and was assigned to rvilliarris ton on the Flint District
He also served at Grand Blanc, Madison Ave., Bay City, and then Alpena.
Louis .Ellinger was married to Thelma Begeman, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Bernard Begeman of Allegan, Michigan.
They have four children, Joanne, Jan,
Janet, and the Rev. John Ellinger serving in the West Michigan Conference.
Louis graduated from Hopkins High School, Hopkins, Michigan in 1926.
He
attended Cleveland Bible Institute, Cleveland, Ohio where a certificate was
granted.

He attended John Fletcher College, University Park , Oskaloosa, Iowa
where he received a B. A. degree .
He attended Drew Theological Seminary at
Madison, J. J . and received his B.D. degree in 1939.

During his years in the ministry, Louis served as Chairman of the Saginaw Bay
District Board of Missions and Church Extension.., and the District Board of
Church Location.
He was an active Kiwanian while i n Williamston, and during
his pastorate in Alpena he served as a member of the North East Michigan
Rehabilitation Commission.
Louis enjoys fishing and rock polishing (lapidary) as a hobby.
He plans
to spend summers at his cottage in Lake Louise and winters at Lake Havasu City,
Arizona.
He will be part of a work camp in Kentucky this summer, and while in
Arizona he plans to work among American Indians
through one of the church's
mission projects.

Ellinger became a registered
nurse after completing training
at Bronson Methodist Hospital
in Kalamazoo. On June 12,
1960, she married Rev. Ellinger, who preceded her in
death. She has been an active
UM throughout her life, giving
strong leadership to numerous
UMW groups in local churches served by her husband. She
b elieved in the importance of
the ministry of the laity and
lived out of that commitment.
She is survived by a daughter,
Janet (Allan) Meyer Ketchum
of Salem, Ore.; three step children, the R ev. John (Sally)
Ellinger of Okemos, Mich.,
Joanne (Harold) Fassett of Fox
Island, Wash., and Rev. Janet
Ellinger of Eau Claire, Wise.; a
sister-in-law, Bernice Begeman
of Kalamazoo; and many other
relatives. A memorial service is
planned for Thursday F eb. 19,
at 6:30 p.m . at the Westwood
UMC in Kalamazoo. Memorials may be sent to the church
M emorial Fund, the American
Cancer Society, or the United
Parkinsons Assn. Condolences

Cleveland, graduating in 1933. ShE
worked for 11 years as an a ssistant hos·
pita! floor s upervisor. Since her mar·
riage she also worked at hospita ls ir:
Paw Paw, Frankfort and at Sparro\v
Hospital, Lansing, where she wo1·ked
until March of 1958.
She underwent s urgery in November
1953 and was in fairly good health
until the summer of 1957. She spent
much of the last two years in hospitals,
waging an uphill battle against cancer
which claimed her life.
Active in the William s ton a nd Wil=
iamston Center Methodist churches,
Mrs. Ellinger s howed special interest
in the WSCS, the choir a nd the church
scho ol. Before going to Williamston
five years ago , the Ellingers served at
Frankfort, Bellaire, Lawton and Three
Oaks.
Mrs. Ellinger is survived by h er husband, two daughters, Joanne, 17, Janet,
11; a son, John, 15; a brother-inlaw, Berna1·d Ellinger of Kalamazoo;
and two siste1·s-in-law, Mrs. Charles
Brown of Kalamazoo and Mr ·. William
Curri e of Allegan.
Funeral services were held in the Community Methodist Church of Williamston March 16 with Dr. C. A. McPheeters, di strict sup erintendent, officiating. H e was assisted by Rev. A.
T. F. Butt, retired, and Rev. Wanen
Brown of Lans ing Mt. Hope.
Mr.
Brown was the Ellingers' pastor a t
Hopkins, Michigan. Casket b earers were
Hugh Ellinger, Bemard Ellinger, William Currie, Milton Ellinger, Charles
Brown and Paul Ellinger.

Grand Rapids. He is survived
by his wife Thelma Ellinger,
and children, the Rev. John
Ellinger, Lansing District
superintendent, the Rev. Janet
Ellinger, Joanne Fassett, and
Janet Ketchum. A memorial
service for Rev. Ellinger was
held on Jan. 10 at Kalamazoo:
Westwood UMC, to which
memorials may be made, as
well as the Parkinson's Foundation. Condolences can be

KRISTI LYNNE KETCHUM, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ketchum of Salem, Oregon, was one of four babies baptized by her grandfather, Rev. Louis El~r, of the Madison Avenue United
MeH1odist Church of Bay City, on December 21. On December 27 , assisted by
his son, Rev. John Ellinger, assistant pastor of the First United Methodist Church
of Poughkeepsie, New York, Mr. Ellinger baptized a grandson, SCOTT
ELLINGER FASSETT, son of Lt. Comdr.
and Mrs. H . S. Fassett, Jr.,
