C_harles was born in Vermont. lllinois to Rev. Curtis and LuLu Ewing. Both of
his parents and three brothers were ministers and his sister married a minister.
As a young adult he sang with his three brothers in a gospel quartet. In their
evangelistic ministry, the four brothers would sing, and then one of them would
preach a sermon.
·
After attending college at Chicago Evangelistic Institute, Charles served in the
U.S. Army in the European theater (WW ll) for 32 months. He was an Assistant
Chaplain ranked as a Technical Sergeant and was the company bugler. One of his
most cherished memories was having the honor of playing "Taps" at the end of
the war at Oberammergau, Germany. After the war Charles pastored at least ten
churches, including churches in Chicago, St. Louis, Omaha, Dayton, and most
recently Campbell Memorial United Methodist Church in Ferndale. He retired
from pastoring in 1994 at the young age of 82. He was loved and revered by all
the church members. Each person he ministered to sensed his sincere love and
compassion. Charles dedicated his entire life to spreading God' s love and His
gospel of grace and forgiveness and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
For 32 years, Charles was president of the Evangelical Church Alliance (E.C.A.)
and was a member for over 50 years. The E.C.A. is an international ministerial
association of interdenominational ministers and missionaries with over 2 000
members. Charles was also president of the Evangelical Church Allianc~ in
Canada. Throughout his life Charles had an extensive radio ministry on over 52
different stations. Locally he had a Sunday broadcast on WEXL. He also proudly
volunteered as chaplain at the Ferndale jail, ministering to those incarcerated as
well as to the dedicated Ferndale police. He retired from there in 2000 at the age
of88.

also ~articipated in and supported the Gideons ' ministry and thoroughly

In his young~r _d~ys, Charles was very active in the Temperance League of Illinois
and the ProhibitiOn Party. For two years Charles served as chaplain of the Illinois
State Senate. In the 1970's he had the distinguished honor of being the first to
lead prayer in the U. S. Senate's new prayer chapel in Washington D.C. He also
had the privilege of leading the U.S. Senate in prayer.
Charles received his Doctorate of Divinity in 1978 form Toronto Bible Colleoe
0
.
His book, The Bible and Its Wines, served as his dissertation.
Charles was full of life and a dedicated and loving family man. He was as
devoted to h!s ~fe of 52 years as she was to him, and was a loving, godly
example to h1s children. He loved to sing and had a wonderful sense of humor a
quit wit, and a hearty laugh. Many sermons and wedding ceremonies w~re
enhanced by a good uplifting joke. Charles was a dedicated, spirit-filled servant
of the Lord. He reached beyond denominational boundaries and lived the motto .
of the Evangelical Church Alliance:
"In things essential, unity
In things nonessential, liberty,
And in all things, charity."

Charles's favorite scripture encapsulated the gospel to which he dedicated his life:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever
believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16
