ELWOOD J. BERKOMPAS
I was born in Holland, Michigan, to Albert and Winnie
Berkompas, on August 27, 1932. Because of the Great Depression, my family moved to Niles, Michigan, before I was a year old.
My childhood and youth were spent in Niles, where I graduated
from high school in 1950.
I was baptized in The Reformed Church of America while still in Holland, but my early
Sunday school experience was in The Presbyterian Church. My parents decided to unite with
The First E. U .B. Church in Niles because they offered Sunday evening services, as well as
Sunday morning. My later elementary and youth years were spent in this church where I was
involved musically, serving as organist during my Junior and Senior years in high school, as well
as in the youth program.
Because of the influence of my pastor, Rev. G. A. Steeby, other supportive adults in the
church, and my youth fellowship and camping experiences, I enrolled in North Central College
in Naperville, Illinois, seeking to prepare for a career in church music. However, after my
freshman year, I felt God's call to pastoral ministry. I graduated from North Central in 1954
with a BA degree and majors in music and philosophy, went across the street to Evangelical
Theological Seminary and graduated from there in 195 7. In 1981, I was granted a Doctor of
Ministry degree from Drew University.
I was licensed as a Probationer in the Michigan Conference (EUB) in 1954 and ordained
an Elder in 1957. All of my pastorates have been in Michigan, beginning in Adamsville in 1956
as a student pastor. After ordination, I was privileged to serve the Adamsville-Kessington charge,
Grand Rapids Northlawn, Detroit Trinity as Associate Pastor, Monroe First, Detroit Zion, Troy
First, and for the last thirteen years at Ann Arbor West Side. Each appointment brought challenges and rewards, and I leave them all with many wonderful memories.
In 1953, I met Barbara Erickson from Racine, Wisconsin , while we were both students at
North Central. We were married on June 18, 1955, and have been blessed with seven children; Judith, Cheryl, Pamela, Michael, Scott, Robert and Todd. Their marriages have been
blessed with a total of eight children, who we proudly claim as our grandchildren. In late 1987,
Barb was stricken with meningitis and a stroke, which has left her with a partial disability, but we
move into retirement with good health otherwise.
Besides my first love as a pastor, I have served God and my church as organist for many
sessions of the Michigan Conference (EUB), as well as for many years at Pastor's School. I also
served as chairperson of the former Board of Local Church Ministries in our conference, and as
a member of the Boards of Education (EUB and UM), Board of Ministry (EUB) and the Board of
Pensions (UM). I also was a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Methodist Conference Credit Union, serving as its chairperson for a number of years. Other activities have
included leadership roles in district ministerial fellowships, district councils, district boards of
missions, and in various ways in the communities where we lived.
We move into retirement eagerly, but with no regrets as we look back at our years of
service. Our only feelings are those of gratitude to God and to the EUB and United Methodist
Churches for the privilege of serving in ministry. Our address in retirement will be 2142 S. ,
Miramichi Dr., Evart, Michigan 49631.

Berkompas died February 4th. A memorial service will be held Tuesday,
February 6th at 6 :00 p.m. at First UMC in Troy.
