Dear Ronald,

Your interesting letter c ame.

In the years of the First World War auto mobiles were in little use in the
Upp er Peninsula, and the roads were mostly gravel and traveled by ho rses
and wagons and buggies.
The r::ethodist ministers did most of their traveling
by train. It was an

ove~ni ght

journey from the Ironwood and Copper Count ry

territories . We would leave on Sunday night because the Conferences s tarted
on Tuesday morning in those years. The train would g et to St. I gnace
in the morning and it would take most of Monday to g et to the pl ace of
the Conference.

I remember getting on the train i n the Pullman section

~nd finding other pr eachers already in their berths and I would & climb
into an upper one bec ause the earl ier pas seng ers had taken the lower ones.
Occasionally, we went by boat from St. Ignace t o Po rt Huron or

if t he Conference was being held in the river section. I r emembe r we took
some food along on t he train or boat, maybe to save buying , as s a larie s were
low and food prepared on train or boa t was expensive t o us.
Mrs Bircham and I r emember taking the tra in to St. I gnace and g etting
on the boat at St. Ignace for Port Huron wh ere t he Conference was
held in 1915. On the return trip the side-wheel e r cro ssed Sag inaw Bay when it
wa& very rough and the boat rolled some, a nd Mrs Bircham was ve ry sick
and wondered why they d i dntt stop the boat. In the morning aft er differe nt
ones had been sick, Mrs B. couldn't unde rstand how some of those same
preachers, for most of the U. P . ministers had gone down t hat way, could
41torder ba con a nd egg s for breakfast at a restaurant a t St. I gnace.
But we s till rememb er the fun the ministers gad most of the da y going on the
