THIRTEEN MINISTERIAL MEMBERS RETIRE FROM THE DETROIT CONFERENCE
Shown above, with Bishop Craig , are the retiring ministerial
members of the Detroit Conference and their spouses just after
they were honored Thursday afternoon , June 5. Shown from
left are: Bishop Judith Craig, Bruce and Murzelle Brown, Anne
Retirees share with conference
ADRIAN (MCA)-Each year the time
shared with the retiri ng clergy families is
a special time at conference. A retirement
booklet was printed with information about
the retirees again this year.
This year they were far from retiring!
Although only seven took part, th e program went until six p.m. There was some
disappointment that several could not or
did not appear before conference.
Retirees were introd uced by Tom
Wachterhauser from the Board of Ordained Ministry, spoke, were greeted by
Bishop Craig, received a corsage or
boutonniere from Bea Horton and Virginia
Kelly, and a gift from Karl Ziegler
representing the UM Foundation.
Some highlights included:
Stan and Anne Bailey-She said, " A
goodbye could be the beginning of a new
hello." He noted that "having just hugged the Bishop, I just want to say that th ere
will be no male ministers left in the conf~~~t;~in~~ l wJJ.h rt~~eij~eoQ:lbfu
hugged.'
J . Bruce and Murzelle BrownM"urzelle said , " When I came as a bride
to Michigan from Georgia, we had no central heating. It was the warmth and spirit
of those people, and people since that has
warmed me." He said, " Frank Field
started me in the ministry 43 years ago,
and now I will be helping to ordain Ray
Field, his grand-nephew, so we have
come full circle!" " I've had a Samuel
Wesley ministry. Perhaps there are some
young John Wesleys among us today?"
lew and Jean Compton-J ean said,
" Lew loves people. A friend said, 'Your
husband is the only man I know who can
go to the store to get a quart of milk, and
by the time he gets home it is sour! ' " He
said, when discussing being shot by an arrow , near death, "Our paper that day had
two headlines: 'Old Chesaning landmark
is toppled' and 'Chesaning pastor is shot'!
He noted, " When I came home from the
/rp/.fb
and Stan Bailey, Homer and Wynona Van Buren, Edna and
Howard Shaffer, Donald Pinner, Lew and Jean Compton and
Sam Tatem . Not pictured are: Audrey Dunlap, Kendall Cowing,
Bert Hosking, Ray Middleton, Ralph Pratt and Howard Jones.
service, I felt a call to ministry. I felt there
had to be a better way rather than fighting
each other."
Audrey Dunlap was unable to be present, but wrote, " In nine year of ministry,
my cars went five times around th e world,
all within five counties of the Upper Peninsula!"
Don Pinner-He said , "I have made
easier speeches than this one. I owe my
whole ministry to my wife Marie, and she
should be here today with me." (Marie
died this past year.)
Homer and Wynona Van Buren-He

Lord God, our Fat her, now we come to Thee,
Who was, · and is, and evermore shall beGod in three pers on s, Holy Trinity:
Hear us, as now we pray.
Hear us for these Thy children sore distressed,
For this, their loved one now among the blessedThe saints immortal who have found their rest.
Comfort their hearts as only Thou canst do,
Bind them more closely, with the point of viewThat they will lean more heavily on you.
Hear us as now we pray.
Gr a nt unto them, in these their hours of gr ief ,
The calm assurance and the sure belief
That you will gi ve thei r minds and souls reli ef .
If in their gri e f they verge upon dispair,
Grant that they ever ma y be quite aware,
Th a t they have friends who understand and care.
Hear us, as now we pray.
Help them re ca ll in spite of pai n and tears,
The use fu l things .he did across the years,
In church, . community4and among his peers.
Help them recall his deeds of charity,
His love of music, art and poetry,
Ans may we hoi d him in fond memory .
He ar us, as now we pray .
Help us to learn the needed les s on, Lo rd,
Tha t tho~ g h death's coming always hits us hard,
The end of labor is a just reward.
So we commend this loved one unto Thee,
Firm in the faith that he will e ver be
Safe in Thy keeping through eternity:
Hea r us as now we pray.
And when we too must quit the walks of men,
May we too, find in Thee a sincere friend,
Whose love and care shall never know an end.
Hear us as now we pray. Amen.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER
WELL DONE
Servant of God, well done!
Rest from thy l oved employ :
The battle fought; the victory won,
Enter thy Master's joy.
The pains of death are past,
Labour and sorrow cease,
And Life's long warfare closed at last,
Thy soul is found in peace.
