THE REV. MERLE D.
BROYLES, 74, a retired member
of the West Michigan Conference, died Aug. 22 at home.
He had retired in 1981 from
Jackson First UMC. Merle was
born in Paducah, Ky., the son of
Dow
and
Frances
Broyles , on
Nov. 18, 1916.
His wife of 54
years, Brucilla, survives.
The pastor
served as a
district superintendent in the Detroit Conference. He served for many
years at the Somerset Congregational Church . Twice a delegate
to the World Methodist Conference, he traveled to Oslo, Norway and Dublin, Ireland. His
daughter Charlotte has cerebral
palsy. He helped to found what is
now the Jackson County Society
for Handicapped Children and
Adults. Besides his wife, he

leaves a son and daught~r-in-law,
Allen Wayne (Christi) Broyles of
Lombard, Ill.; daughter, Charlotte
Broyles of Jackson; and many
other relatives. Memorial services
were held at Jackson First UMC
on Aug. 24 with Drs. John Cermak and Robert Jongeward officating. Tributes may be made to
Hospice of Jackson; UMCOR; or
to the Jackson Society for Handicapped Children and Adults.
