What do I believe concerning God, J@~ui ~ Christ, the Holy
Spirit, conversion, sin eternal life and etc ?
3
I believe that God is the Creator along with Jesus Christ and
the Holy Spirit. You can go back to the Book of Genesis and read
wher;e God says Let us make man in our image ... God was not talking to Himself, He was talking to Je s us and The Holy Spirit.
11
As God continued on the creative path, I believe He knew
that His creation called man would rebell thus causing a rift between himself and God. This made the earthly birth of Jesus G i·i
Christ an inevitable happening. All we have to do is read the
conversation God had with the Serpent recorded in Gensis 3:15 to
realize this was going to happen. It is there we begin to understand the love God h~ for His creation called man .
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, but He is much more than that.
He's thge Creator of all things, this is what we are told in the
Gospel of John. Yet there is something more than that, something
that makes Him so important. He is the Saviour of all of mankind .
Still He is still something more, He is my Saviour, He is my Lord.
How do I know this, because I experienced His saving grace in my
heart and life. I become very protective when it comes to Jesus.
I look on Him as my personal Saviour and at the same time I realize I must share with everyone. Thi s is in itself a paradox. I
love Jesus so much that I cannot. keep quiet about Him.
Wlie.n .Jesus walked up that long pathway to Calvary, and they ·.
nailed Him to the cross, all of mankind breathed a sigh of relief.
Now there was a way for them to escape death and become recipients of eternal life.
The Holy Spirit isthe one who leads me throught life. Not
only does He lead me through life but He led me to life in Christ.
There is no way you can acknowledge or love one of thes persons
without acknowledging and loving all three.
Conversion is the beginning of life, that is, eternal life.
I so metimes get frustrated when I hear people state that they look
forward to eternal life when they get to heaven. They need to
realize they are recepients of eternal life the moment they accept
Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
Conversion is the doorway to
that life.
It is ~~rough conversion we are forgiven, thus making us once
again the children of God, I know we are already His children
through creation, but we were . separated from Him by sin. The only
way we can come back to Him is through the conversion experience.
As I previously stated, at the point of conversion we once
again become the children of God. It is throught this act our
human nature is changed. Before we meet and accept Christ as Lord
and Saviour, everything we do is contrary to the word of God.
When I say everything, I am not talking about specific acts of s in .
This is one of our many problem s after we meet and accept
Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. We still want to deal with
the sins of the flesh. But as I read the Word of God I find that
Jesus dealt with the sins of the spirit not the flesh. Take the
parable of the rich young ruler, or the encounter of Jesus with
the woman at the well. These people had a problem with their
thought which spilled over into their lives causing them ~ to act
the way they did. Thus sins of the spirit.
It is through the conversion experience we get our hope. Yet
we must never forget the words of the Apostle Paul as recorded in
1 Corinthians 15 : 19 for there we read :
"IF IN THIS SLIFE ONLY. WE HAVE HOPE IN CHRIST, WE ARE OF ALL MEN
MOST MISERABLE.
II
Our hope goes beyond this l~fe to the next. So onec again
we begin to see that God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit, conversion, human
nature, hope, eternal 1 ife, grace, and etc. are all 1 inked together.
One thing that stands apart from these things is the church
yet it is still conected. The church is a body of believers. The
United Methodisy Church is just a portion of that body. But I believe a very · special portion.
I believe that the United Methodist Church is the greatest
instrument of the Gospel God has ever raosed up. We are a great
church confronting a sick world. We need to lift Jesus Christ so
high that the only visible thing . seen will be Him. We do not need
to lift Methodism, not its mini s ters, but Jesus Chri s t and Him .;
crucified.
My prayer is that the United Methodist Church will continue
to return to the teachings of its founder, John W~sl~y ~ we are .·
on the road back, it may be a struggle but it i s a worthwhile one.
I thank God continually for the United Methodist Church and what
it stand s for. Let s ke ep moving forward and s upply a needy world
with the medicene it need s .
..
I was converted on November 16, 1960 . My conversion expe.rience took place in Pekin, Illinois at the Tazwell County jail.
I am the least deserving of all United Methodists . whetser they be
ministers o~ laymen. By God ~n His wondefful love not only forgave me of my sins, He also called me into the ministry.
I had never finished high school. I . quit at the age of fif~
teen and started to drive a truck for my father on a fulltime
basis. This never seem to cause me any problems in answering God's
call on my life . When I returned home . from Illinois I had but
one b~r~ing desire and that was to become a minist~r of the Gospel .
The first · thing I did was to take a G. E. O. test and recieved
an equivalent of a high school diploma. My wife had been senoing
our children to a small Methodis~ Church on the west side of
Detroit-and that is how I became acquainted with the Methodist
Church. We started attending that church and after a few weeks
I requested that the Pastor baptise cme and my family . We joined
the church and attended it for about one year and nine months .
It was during this time a became a Sunday School teacher and
one of the youth councelors. Our Lot.d works in very strange ways
and it was throught being a yo~th councelor I met Elsie Johns .
Something seemed to be missing in my Christiam life and the
church I was attending didn't s~em to supply my needs. I started
attending many different churches on Wednesday evenings and Sunday
evenings. It was during this time Elsie was holding a revival at
the Preston Methodist Church on O~trtot's west side . It was at ~ . ·

Clarenceville Methodist Church. It took place on a Sunday morning during the early worship service . That very same Sunday I
wa s introduced to the tenth grade Sunday School class as their new
teacher. That evening I was introduced to the senior high youth
group and became one of their councelors.
In the meantime I met Or. Everette Seymour , the District
Superintendent of the Detroit Conference . Dr. Seymour never en~ '
couraged me in my desire to become a minister in the Methodist
Church . He stated that he would never grant me a Local Preacher's
licen s e. Again God came to the rescue a~d Rev . Hebert Hauser took
Dr . Selmour's place as District Superintendent and it wa s through
him I received my fi r,s t Local Preacher' s licen s e. Thu s I s tarted
my long tedious journey of becomming a Methodist minister.
As time passed by Dr, Merle Broyles became My District Superintendent. Every year I reported to the Di s trict Board of Ministry
and never recieved any encouragement . In fact it was Dr. Broyles
who told me to forget the ministry and just remain a layman in
the church. Thi s I co uld not do, God had called me and I had no

Thus began my faith journey in the United Methodist Church .

the church. This I could not do, God had called me and I had no

It was at Asbury that my faith really began to be enlarged.
I never knew that the Christian Ministry €Ould be such an enjoyable experience. I have stated over and over that the ministry
is the most joyous vocation I have ever experienced. If it ever
becomes work to me I will be the first one to start looking for
another field of enployment.
I started my journey of faith in November of 1960. That was
the month and year I met and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and
Saviour. This all happened in the Tazwell County jail in Pekin,
Illinois.
When I returned home from Pekin I started to attend a small
Methodist Church called Simpson Methodist Church. At Simpson I
became a Sunday School teacher and a Senior high youth councelor .
Later I transferred my church membership to the Clarenceville
Methodist Church in Farmington Township. At this church, under
the directions of Elsie John, ·· ~y minister, I f urthered prepared
myself for the ministry. In the spring of 1969 immediately following Annual Conference I was asked to pa stor the Asbury United
Methodist Church on East Grand Blvd. in Detroit Michigan.
It was at Asbury uhder the loving guidance of the members of
the church I began to futther prepare for my ministry i It was the
prayers and the loving kindness of these pe ople that helped me to
grow in my Christian life.
I continued my studies and just before I left the Asbury
Church I had them just about completed. I can remember how the
Conferehce board of the ministry asked me to go to G~ErT.S. to
finish my st udies.
I had been transferred from Asbu ry to the Pe ck-B uel-Melvin
Charge in the Port Huron District. It was at this charge I really
· learned what it was to be a full time pastor of a church. I stayed at this Charge for three years. I then was transferred to the
Lake Linden -Pa inesdale Charge in the Marquette District .
It was at this Charge I finished my college requirements to
become an Associate Member of the Detroit Annual Conference. The
college I attended was the Suomi College of Hancock Michigan.
My grade point average at this college was three point five
or seven. I really enjoyed these days in the Marquette Distrtct.
But was finally tran sferre d to the Aldersgate-Elmwood Charge in
Pontia c, Mi c higan.
At this Charge I started a Sunday evening service that was
still going strong when I was transferred in 198 3 . My health began to fail and I was in and out of the hospital many times. In
fact in the last two years I was at the ATdersgate-Elmwood Charge
I was in the hospital seven times. Finally on the seventh time
my doctor encouraged me to have a heart by-pass operation. Since
this operation was performed I have had no problems with my heart
or any other part or organ in my body . I am firmly convin c ed
I own my recovery not to the doctors but to my Lord.
..
finally I was transferred to my present Charge which is the
Memphis-Lamb Charge in the Port Huron District. My wife and I have
been at this Charge going on three years. I cannot truthfully
say that everything is wonderful at this Charge because that would
not be telling the truth. But one thing I can say and that is:
My zeal for the ministry have never decreased from day one.
I can go back to the time I first met Jesus Christ and accepted
Him as my Lord and Saviour and state that ·I love Him more than I
ever loved Him before . It is for me and will always be for me a
privilege and an honor to be a part of the ministry of His church.
I always have been since the day of my conversion a Christian
Now I am a Christian in the United Methodist Church that has been
doubly blessed by God, for He has allowed me to preach the Gospel.
