The Call
The Rev. Kenneth Christler, new pastor at Alpena First
UMC, grew up in a parsonage. As the son of a UM pastor, the
Rev. Lloyd Christler, "I resisted that call. I knew wh at parsonage life was like."
The moment Ken accepted Christ
was when he was a youth delegate
to Annual Conference. In the 70s
h e worked in leisure ministries (Top
of the Thumb) and at last gave in to
the call. "It came a lot sooner than
I ever wanted to acknowledge."
Over the years the call changed for
Ken "in my understanding of relationships we build among colleagues. I have a deep appreciation
for friendships among my colleagues. I appreciate the work they do and our different
strengths."
Ken sees his new appointment as "a different thrust, a different avenue," and a sufficient challenge for the moment.
"I will continue to vision for the church," he says. "I see
myself on the edge of trying to lead the church in new directions. That will always be part of my call. I want to help us as
United Methodists to revision and to claim our task for the
new century."
