DAVID E. CHURCH
I was born as a belated Christmas present on December 26,
1931, in Wyandotte, Michigan. I was the fourth of five children
born to Edna (Kendall) a school teacher and homemaker, and Earl
Church who retired as director of the Attendance Department of
the Detroit Public Schools. I am grateful for the faith experiences I received from my family and
the Methodist Church in Wyandotte during my formative years.
After graduating from Wyandotte High School, I attended the University of Michigan
where the Wesley Foundation had a profound impact upon my life and career choice. It is also
where I met, courted and married my friend and life-partner, Winona Grosse. Our wedding on
June 11, 1955, was the same week that I was received into The Detroit Annual Conference on
trial.. .the beginning of my life's two greatest adventures.
I served three years as assistant pastor in a Congregational-Unitarian Church in Lincoln,
Massachusetts, while attending Boston ·university School of Theology. Nona taught school in
Lincoln for two years and received her PhT degree (Putting Hubby Through). Following seminary our professional education and personal growth were greatly enriched with a year of travel
in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, interspersed with graduate study at The Ecumenical Institute near Geneva, Switzerland. I later earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew
University.
My first Detroit Conference appointment was at Grass Lake, followed by Houghton,
Rochester St. Lukes, Walled Lake, Dearborn Mt. Olivet, Livonia Newburg and Highland. These
years included Wesley Foundation work at Michigan Tech and Oakland University. Service on
boards and ecumenical agencies--especially Outdoor Education and Higher Education--have
added rich experience and longtime friendships to my life.
We have four wonderful children, three of them married with one child each. They are
located in San Francisco, Seattle, Ann Arbor, and Jakarta, Indonesia. We will soon move into a
small house in Ann Arbor and manage a student apartment building we have purchased as a
retirement business. We are eager to get started on our "dream list" of retirement activities.
