Bish op Davis Wasgatt Clark was born on the island of Mount
Desert, Maine , February 25 , 1812.
He wa s converted in earl y boyhood.
In 1836 he gra dua t ed from the Wes l eyan University, and became a
professor in the Amenia Seminary and l ater its Principal.
In 1840
he entered the New York Annual Conference and af'ter f illing five
appointments was elected Editor of the Ladies' Repository ,
published by the Book Concern at Cincinnat i, Ohio.

1864, he was
ele cted General Superintendent at t he Philadelphia General Conference.
As Bi shop he organized several of the Southern Confer ences.
In the
Fa ll of 1870 when h e pre sided over the Detroit Conference, his health
had begun to fail·
But he bravely continued h i s work; he finally
broke down at the Spring Conference of New York i n 1871, after
conducting its opening session with t he Lord's Supper .
His strength
somewhat rally i ng , he reached his home at Cincinnati , and breathed
hi s last, af'ter an unconscious period, May 23, 1871.
He was careful in official duties as Bishop, a lover of
Chri s tian songs and music, and a successful preacher •
