-oJudson Philip Cooper was born near Smithville,
Canada, March 2, 1860.

His mother died when he

was sixteen years o! age and the family was broken
up.

Four years later he came to Michigan and made

his home with his sister, Mrs. Mary Quick, in
Tuscola county.

Previous to this time he had been

graduated !rom a high school in Ontario and was
converted at a Baptist revival meeting.

He later

joined the Methodist Church.
He became very active in his church, and served
as superintendent of a Sunday school and worked to
get funds with which to secure a theological
training.

He took up the conference course of study

and was ordained.
His first work as a minister was as assistant
to the Reverend Samuel Gilchrist, pastor of the
Me thodist Episcopal Church at Cass City.

His first

charge was at Bridgeport, Saginaw county, where he
served !or one year and then went to Carrollton and
Zilwaukee for a year.
He attended Garrett Biblical Institute for a

year and a half and then went to Nebraska and South
Dakot a .
In 1894, he returned to Michi gan, and served
the Bennington and Pittsburg charge for one year
and was then sent to Asbury Me thodist Church in
Saginaw.

After serving that church for one year

he took a year's work in the Mt. Vernon Seminary in
Boston, Massachusetts.

He completed his work there

in the middle of the conference year, returned to
Saginaw and on June 24, 1896, was married to Miss
hmelia Sophia Brueck, who was born in Saginaw
December 17, 1870, d·a ughter of Frederick and
Charlotte Schrick Brueck.

They became the parents

of:
Foss Landon, born Au gust 11, 1897, at Bay City,
Michigan, married Elsie Heginbottom, became the father of Judson Howard, born
December 13, 1930, resides in Saginaw and
is an auditor;
Frederick, born March 8, 1903, at Evanston,
Illinois, was graduated from the Houghton
College of Mines, is an engineer, married
Marian King, became the father of Gerald
King, born September 4, 1939, resides in
Saginaw;
Charlotte Kathryn, born June 15, 1906, at
Caseville, Michigan, was graduated from the
Saginaw high school in 1924 , received the
degree of Bachelor of Arts from Albion
College in 1928, was graduated from the
School of Library Service of Columbia
Unive rsity in 1940 and resides with her
mother in Saginaw .

In 1896, Mr. Cooper was appcinted pastor of the
Woodside Avenue Methodist Church in Bay City, where
he served for three years.

He then served the

church at West Branch for one year and was pastor at
Walled Lake, Oakland county, for two years.

In

1902, t he family returned to Evanston, Illinois, and
after two years of study he was graduated from
Garrett Biblical Institute in 1904.
He was then appointed pastor at Caseville and
served three years.

In 1907, he was sent to Armada

and served until 1910, when he was sent to
Was hington Avenue Methodist Church in Port Huron.
In 1912, he became the pastor of Asbury Methodist
Church in Owosso and the Methodist Church in
Pittsburg.
He was an earnest and tireless worker for the
church and a man of deep religious convictions who
practiced what he preached.

Many were the people

who were warmed by his sympathy and were assisted in
material ways through his charit a ble efforts.
Death came to Mr. Cooper June 9, 1915.
The funer a l was conducted by the district superintendent, Dr. A. B. Leonard, assisted by other minis ters of the conference and burial was in Saginaw.
