Frank Blaine Cowick:
~·
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Frank Blaine Cowick, jr.,
was born on November 15, 1925, the fourth
child of Frank Sr. and Lena Apsey Cowick i n
Monmouth, Illinois.
His family moved during the earl y depression
days to Detroit, M ich. He was educated in the
public schools of that city. He was nurtured in
the faith and was active in the Prested Methodist
Episcopal Church wh ich was located in the
shadow of the Ambassador Bri dge. U nder the
ministry of the late Chester Stocki nger, he made
hi s profession of faith. Ivan Hodgson and Jack
S. Jury were subsequen t pastors who had a
significa nt i nfl uence in his li fe and w hose nurturing led to the professional mi nistry of the
church.
His collegiate training took place at the Detroit Institute of Technology and Wayne
State University. Graduate stud ies were pursued at the University of Detroit Law School,
and at the Garrett Eva ngelical Semi nary. Post graduate experien ces took place at Northwestern University, Michigan State University and Ya le University.
H is marriage to Martha Belle Sheffield who had been a chi ldhood acquaintance took
place in 1950. Their un ion has been especially blessed w ith the bi rth of th ree children:
Dr. Anne Cowick Hampson, Blaine Sheffield Cowick and Laure l jean Cowick. Three
granddaughters bring joy to their lives.
Hi s 35 year pastorate allowed him to serve the Ingham Circuit, Stockbrid ge, Flat Rock,
Frankli n Communi ty and the First United Methodist Chu rch of Saginaw.
-
TESTIMONIAL: In those days Frankl in Vi llage still had its small town ways-rumors
traveled by wo rd of mo uth faste r than th e speed of light. "A new pastor's been appointed to the church!"
" W ho?" "A Reverend Frank Cowick. I' m not certain I' m pronouncing his name right,
but he's married and has three small children. All reports from his last ch urch in Flatrock
are good." Thus began a long and frui tfu l chapter in the ministry of Frank Cowick,
a legacy of service stretching from Stockbridge to Flatrock and Franklin to Saginaw.
Frank's pastori ng was never confined by the church wa lls o r membership rolls; he
ministered to the enti re commun ity. The ch urch itse lf was a beehive of community
activities w ith village board meeti ngs, community associatio n meetings, scouts, antique shows, coop nursery meetings, library meetings, community players, and even
an occasional village library meetin g. When some members of the community sti rred
up controversy by wo rking to fo rm an historic district in Franklin (Michigan's first),
Frank opened the church to its meetin gs. All of th is was on top of a fu ll menu of church
programs ranging from choir to U.M.Y.F. to U.M.W.
At the center was Frank, never too busy to greet, never too preoccupied to ask about
the health of a relative, never so w rapped up in his own concerns that he didn't mirror Christ's love in a community of automotive gypsies, Frank was the balance w heelsteady, reliable, affable and utterly human. He took ministry to people, not wa iting
for th em to come to him. For example, by being an active member of the Franklin
Players and having ro les in their theater productions, he enabled people to feel th e
chu rch's presence.
•
Frank's presentation of the gospel was quiet, laced w ith humo r and, above all, effecti ve. He was never one to grab you by th e scruff of the neck and rub your nose in
the Bible; rather Frank lived his fa ith and thereby led his parishioners to a deeper
understanding of Scri pture and Christiani ty. In Franklin alone five people heard th e
call into ordained ministry th rough Frank's tutelage.
Frank pastored a church liked a good gardener. He was always working to build up
the soil, to provide the proper nutrients for the plants, giving great ca re over the young
seedl ings and much respect to the aging trees. He watered and pru ned, planted and
reaped, ferti lized and weeded. Hi s congregation was a garden bearing much frui t.
Everythin g he touched grew ... incl uding me.
