To Rev.w.H.Watson,
I324 Lane Blvd,
Kalamazoo, Mioh.

Dear Brother Watson:Your letter of ikB last week receive with blank,
and I am returning it filled out as far as I can.
My record will not be in uniform like a native born

minister. I have given as much information about my old country experiaBc
as I could find, and I think that you with your connections with me in
Detroit will have some of the information you need, as you were my P.E
at that time.
One thing I left» out was the fact that I starte c to
preach in the !908, and was ordained as a local preacher in 1909.
In connection with my education in this country, there
was none, that is outside christian. I receive the Conference Course,
and passed all eiams with 92%. average.
In regard to the number of sermons , conversions,
Baptisms and Funerals, I am afraid I havent a

oompie~record.

I expeot to see you in the best at Conference.
Yours in HIM,

Walton Crothel.'S, son of John and 7 liza Crothers , vo~a s born J anuary 9,1888
in Cornwall,Engl a nd ,one of a fam ily of f iv e c hildren. He g r ew u p in
his home community and rece ived his educa tion in the Boa r d schools of
Cornwall.
He was convert ed in 190'7 i n t he l:et hod.is t Church under the mi n i s try
of Rev. J. Hartley . He immed i ately b ecame a ctive i n t h e church an d was
shortly appo inted a s a loc al pr eac her, in wh ich capa city he preached
a t many of t h e appointments on the circuit as ass ist ant to the pa stor.
On l!arch 1 2 ,1912 Brother Crothers was unit ed in ma rriage with J..l1 i ss Mary
Ann Ma rtin who sha re d with him the joys of marri ed lif e f or al most
f orty yea rs. At all t ime s s h e was a f a ithful an d devo t ed helpmeet. To
this marriage three children were born ,X««~ John Mart in, Phyllis Mary
a. n d Ge orge Ra ine.
Shortly after the first World War h e came to Ame:c ic a , sp ending some
time in~ Cana da and arrivi~g in Detro i t early in the nint een
t wenties. He began attend ing the Twelfth St . Evange li~al Church of
which he short l y became a memb er. Unde r the ministry of Rev. W. H.C amf i eld, whom he rega r ded h i ghly an d affect i ona te1y called, "Daddy Barnfield;
he was soon a ctively i dentifi ed with the program of the church where
h e served as Sunday School t eacher , stewa rd,cl ass l ea der ana usher.
lith the urgemcy of a Divine ca ll to the Gospel mini s try upon him he
offere d himself to th~ Michigan Conferen ce for minister i al service.
He was recommended by the Twelfth St . congregat ion and was licensed by
the Michig an Confer·ence in 1926. He was ordained as deacon a nd rece iv ed
into the itinerancy in 1929. He r ec eived h is elder ' s orders in 1932 .

1952 and served unt il about the f irst of Oc t ober when it became apparent that he was a very s ic k man . Treatment by physicians did not
i mmediately reveal the nature of h is a ilment. Has congregation very
graciously g ranted him a release from activ e service for a period of
se v ~r a l months and relatives provided f unds for a trip to Engl and ,
which h e and his companion gr ea tl~ enjoyed.
But upon his r e turn it was evident tha t there was little,if any, improv&
ment in his condition. An attempt to take up hi s work as pa stor was
unsucce s sful . Further consult ation with skilled physicians re~ealed
pressure upon an a r ea of the bra in. On MQnday January 26th surf!.. £ry was
undertaken, a l a r ge growth was xwmocxw« d ~ scover e d anu successfu~ly
removed. But apparent shock from the critical oper·at ion wa s Iflore than
more than his weakened body could s t and a nd at about noon on Thursday
Februa ry 5th he stepped from the tabernacle of cla y into the presence
o f h is Divin e Lord.
Broth er Crothers gave 25 f a ithful y ears of service to t he Michigan

Dear Brother Pastor:

~he

Lord is my shepherd:
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in
gree n pastures: He leadeth me
beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul. He leadeth
me in the paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of d e ath, I
will fear no evil: for thou art
with me: thy rod and thy staff
they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies
thou anointest my head with oil:
my cup runneth over:
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life
and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord for ever.
