An Autobiography
Victor Stanley Darling was born in the town of
Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, August 31st, 1878.

His

father, George L. Darling, was born in Pennsylvania,
and his mother, Phoebe Ann Kennedy, was born in
~mithv1lle,

Ontarid.

His father was a highly respected business man
in Simcoe for over fifty years.

Both he and his

wife were devout and active members of the Methodist
Church.

It was in this church that Victor Darling,

the youngest of four brothers, was converted and
entered Christian service as a Sunday · school teacher.
In the public and high school of this town of Simcoe
he received his early education.
Having artistic talent , he entered the employ
of a commercial art firm in the city of Toronto at
the age of twenty-one.

Two years later, moving to

Detroit, Mi chigan, he followed the same profession
and studied at the Detroit Academy of Art.

He was

a graduate of the Page-Davis School of Advertising.

As a young man in Detroit, Mr.

D~rl1ng

devoted

most of his spare time from his
church and mission work.

profession,to

Uniting with Tabernacle

Methodist Church when Dr. Charles Bronson Allen was
pastor, he was active in the work of the Fort Street
Mission, which at that time was under the supervision
of that church.

The young people also held services

in the hospitals, and for a number of years in the
Wayne County Jail.

Later when the City Union of

Epworth Leagues took over the Mission work, Mr. Darling was an officer of that organization.
In 1909 he was married to Miss Jessie M. Patterson of Detroit.

Three children were born to them.

The death of a beautiful daughter, Margaret, aged
eleven, was a severe trial, but one in which their
Christian faith brought great comfort.

The oldest

son Arthur is now a department head at the Gray
Marine Motor Company .

~on

Robert was employed at

the Dodge and Ford Motor Companies until the war
broke out.

He is now in the United States service

in Aviation Radio.
Mr. Darling was one of the founders of the
Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church, Detroit.

He

preached in a store before tne church was built.
Later he was superintendent of the church school and

3

received his local preacher's license here.
His experience in preaching, Sunday school and
young people's work, finally led him and his wife to
decide to devote all their time to the ministry.
At the session of the Detroit Annual Conference at
Flint in 1917 he was admitted on trial and he was
appointed pastor of the Washington Avenue Church,
Port Huron.
During these strenuous years of the first World
War, he completed the Conference Course of Study and
received his Elder's orders at Adrian in 1921.
Trenton was the next appointment.

The beauti-

ful new church was built during this six year pastorate.

The Detroit Edison Company started building

their plant at Trenton at this time.

One night the

tar-paper bunk houses that housed about one thousand
men burned down.

The Methodist minister was instru-

mental in finding lodging for these men that night
for a distracted company.

In recognition of this

service, the general manager of the Edison Company,
Mr. A.

c.

Marshall, gave $1 , 000.00 for the new

churc~

building.
other churches served by the Darlings were:
Ironwood, First, in the Upper Peninsula; RomulusInkster - New Boston Ci r cuit; Bethlehem, Detroit ,

4

three years; S't. Lukes, four years; and Mt. Hope,
Detroit ( Now in the fifth year).
Mr. Darling has made good use of his artistic
ability, frequently

Mrs. Darling has made a study of dramatics

and has directed many fine reli gi ous pageants and
plays, and her work with the Womans Division has
been a great help to her husband and to the churches
served.
