I u the d~:ath of Rev. E. H. Day, which occurred at Cadillac,
:.'\lich., .i\Iarch 31, 159-!, the Michigan Conference lost one of its
oltlt•st members aDll one of its most self-sacrificing and heroic
lllt:U. If the history of his life were fully written up it would
delllonstrate the correctness of the saying, "Truth is stranger.
t ban fiction."
H e was born at Springwaite, N.Y., June 15, 1818. H e was
coll\·erted while young, and joined the Methodist Episcopal
Ch urch, to which he gave the energies of his entire life. H e
wus marrieu at Austenburg, Ohio, to Miss H arriet Brockway,
•'eptember 19, 18-!2, and for nearly forty-five years they shared
in the sacrifices of a missionary and itinerant life. She died
July 23, 18!.10.
·
Htle joine~ thedMicdhigan Conf~rence in the authum n od~ 18-!5,
au was assq:!ne to uty as a rmssionary among t e 1n tans at
Fou D uLac, Minnesota, almost a thousand miles away, not v~ry
far from where the cities of Duluth and Superior now are.
Think of the forti tude and heroism on the part of a man who
could take his ·young wife and two small children and start on
that journey of a thousand miles under the inconveniences of
the modes of travel of half a cPntury ago. H ere they remained
f?r three years, during which they passed through incidPnts of
· hfe some of which were thrilling, some pathetic, and some the ·
occasions of great joy.
He was next sent to organize Church work at the then famons
Cliff copper mine, on the upper peninsula of Michigan. H e
remained for two years.
